[Solved] Problem with \\someServer\someShare address

Post by Borut »

For a longer time (sorry, can not specify precisely since when) I experience the following network related problem (in several networks, irrespective of network size or server OS):

If, and only if, the address is of the form:

\\someServer\someShare\someSubFolder

and I then
  • Double click on the free area in the list (in order to move up), or
  • Use history backward/forward
the problem reporting dialogue "The network location seems to be unavailable: [...]" appears.

After clicking on OK of that dialogue, XY goes to the intended target location without any problem!

Interestingly enough (!!), this error dialogue does NOT appear on:
  • Click on any of these locations in tree,
  • Click on any directory in the list (i.e. going to a subdirectory)
  • Click on any item in breadcrumbs.
It could be that this depends on some network option of mine. Perhaps I forgot about something important which would avoid this problem?

I have to revise my findings:

It does not happen irrespective of the target OS - it happens only when target is a non Win NAS (Qnap).

It apparently happens only to me (with my configuration).
And - finally - it seems that it does not happen with fresh at all.

So, if I find what option constellation provokes this, I will report it here.

I assume it also happens on menu Go | Up?

Could it be you have set the GoUpIsBack tweak?

Code: Select all

GoUpIsBack=1

Ähm, yes, you are correct and - frankly - I am not sure why was it so important for me to set it.

But...

I have now tried it with

GoUpIsBack=0

and the problem persists. :(

Did you tick this?
Configuration | General | Controls and More | Network | Pre-check availability of servers

:beer: Bingo. :beer: That is apparently it. Immediately after unchecking that option the problem is gone.

Is this situation actually as expected and unavoidable?

What's the return of this script?

Code: Select all

text runret("net view");

List of servers, which includes the one in question (a "problematic" Qnap one). Nothing special to notice.

Update:

In the list, at least one server is included, which is currently definitely (really, has nothing to do with XY) unreachable/down.

Update 2:

It is the same list I see when I go to Netzwerk in the tree.

So the server is found in the list? I wonder why you get "The network location seems to be unavailable:"? Could you post that line of the runret return?

! Configuration | General | Controls and More | Network | Pre-check
availability of servers: Would not recognize certain servers as existing
although they did. Fixed.
Fixed indeed! Many thanks! :tup: :tup:
