problem with drag-selecting

(generally) the problem is present in xy-18.90.01 and in xy-18.90.0126 beta
the problem is absent in xy-18.00 and in xy-14.1

for example, i want to select 10 files using the mouse (drag-select). so i hold left mouse button down and drag so that 10 files became selected
then i want to unselect the first 3 files and without releasing the LMB i start to drag down so that only 7 files (out of 10) remained selected
then i release the LMB

but the selection is not changing: i still have 10 files selected
at the same time the status bar indicates: 7 items selected. so my eyes see 10 files selected but xy says '7 items selected'
then if i try to press the 'type stats and filter' button, xy silently crashes

in other words: i can expand the selection while drag-selecting but i cannot reduce the selection while drag-selecting

the problem is absent in case you hold ctrl while drag-selecting

in the latest beta:
- the problem is absent (if nothing is changed in the options)
- the problem immediately appears after activating view->list instead of view->details
