A partition on an internal disk shows as portable in the tree

Post by JustSomeUser »

When I have the program set to show portable devices in the tree, I see my 'Y' parition, which is a partition of an internal SATA III disk and which is not, so far as I can tell, regarded by my OS (Windows 8.1) as a portable device (though that partition is shared over a network). I can supply screenshots if necessary. I'd rather not have the drive appear as portable, because I have it appear in the tree anyway, and so at present I see the parition twice.

Can anyone advise? Thanks.

One option you have, although you may not like it, is available via a tweak

Code: Select all

HideDrivesByLetter=Y
This would make it so that you only see it once in the tree, although it would still be listed under the portable devices node, which isn't what you want.

for instructions on how to tweak:

other than that I am not sure, maybe someone else will have some tips.

It looks like it could be a Microsoft bug, a few tips here that might resolve it for you:

Disabling Hot Swap sounds like a viable option, or upgrading drivers

Thanks, that's very helpful. However, I have come to think that the partition appears twice because it appears normally as a drive and as my downloads folder. So, disabling showing the downloads folder has solved the problem. That said, the drive still appears as 'Y' and not as 'SOFTWARE (Y)', which is the format the other drives appear in. Also, I'm having trouble finding out how to display the items in my XYPlorer (or indeed Windows Explorer) 'favourites' list, in the XYPlorer tree.

Thank you for your time.

To display the Links folder in the tree the option is here:

Configuration | General | Tree and List | Items in Tree and List | Show Links folder

Other than that you need to use the XY catalog, which has no relation to the Windows Explorer Favorites, but if you copy the lnk files into that links folder you can see them in the tree.

Thank you.

You will be pleased to read that I have discovered the inbuilt help.

However, I am having trouble determining how to (1) re-order items within 'links', (2) re-order the top-level tree (user folder, drives, etc.).

  1. You can't reorder them in the tree, unless you want to add numbers to the start of the filenames like 01, 02 etc, but what you can do is use the catalog instead, if you get the links folder up in the list pane then right click the catalog and select "Insert as New Category Here > Current List, then they will be able to be reordered in the catalog, downside is now if you add a link via Explorer you will have to manually add it to the catalog, they won't be dynamically updated anymore, but once you start using XY you won't stop, because it is so great
  2. Same as above you can't reorder in the tree, but you can add them to the catalog and then reorder them there instead.
Info on catalog:

If you want a nice intro to the app this is a good place:

quick screenshot of the catalog, with a smilar setup like I describe:
