Portable File Icons Not Working - Win 10 x64 [Solved]

So I have had this bug for many versions now and I just can't figure out what's causing it. It seems to be particular to two of my Win 10 system while it's fine on others. The screenshot below is from a "fresh" XYplorer I have on my flash drive with my Portable File Icons setup:

The same "fresh" XYplorer on the non-working Windows 10 computer:

There are no differences between the settings. Only difference is I'm using a different computer that is still Windows 10 x64 and the same edition too (both are Education edition). Any clue as to what's going on?

Did you check whether <xyicons> points to an existing path?

And why post again? I had already replied in the other thread... :eh:

Yep! I certainly did. The path definitely exists. I can simply copy and paste them into XYplorer and it will automatically go to that exact folder and select that exact file. Post again?

EDIT: What the heck?! I DID submit a post about this! I'm going crazy! Can you delete the other thread. It's pointless now. And apparently it's posted when I was half-dead mentally. It was so bad I never even realized I made one.

Double check the icons paths, please.

Paste this into the Address Bar:

Code: Select all

<xyicons>\Music.ico
1. Do you see the icon displayed in the bar?
2. What happens when you press enter?

C'mon Don. I'm not a new user. Unless you already forgotten me. Anyways, since I made this screenshot before I read your reply, I'm going to stick with showing an example of using the AVI.ICO file.

Here is a screenshot of a fresh install XYplorer. Bottom pane shows the direct path to the icon. Preview panel shows that it's a working icon. And finally the Customize File Icons dialog with direct path to the icon. That is what I meant by "I did" test it already. I tested that WAAY before I decided to make a thread about this.

I made a portable installation of XYplorer on my flash drive with the Portable File Icons all setup. They worked perfectly. I bring it to another computer. Load it up and it works perfectly. I then bring it to the problematic computers and load it up. They don't work on these computers. I then bring that flash drive to yet another computer and load it up. It works perfectly again. So it's an odd problem.

Here is another screenshot with the relative path entered directly into the address bar and then pressed <Enter>.

And another screenshot IF the file does not exist (did not press <Enter> here).
2017-09-22 03_41_14-C__Users_Owner_Programs_XYplorer_Data_Icons_GOM - XYplorer 18.40 _ User.png

So it becomes a "Question Mark". That's why I was wondering about this issue for a long time. It's not an issue that the file does not exist because if it did not, it would have shown up as a "Question Mark". But it doesn't.

EDIT: That was weird. I was pretty sure highend just asked me to post a screenshot of the configuration here. Anyways, that's what that screenshot above is for.

Post a screenshot of how Windows Explorer displays the icons in your <xyicons> folder please

So the icons are also not shown in the file list. Only in this folder, or in any folder?

Oh, now this is an interesting question.

This is how the icons look whether it's in Details or List.

This is in Tiles mode.

This does explain my suspicion that this is some odd Windows issue. But I don't know what it is.

It's not shown in any folder.

I may be heading off soon so my next reply will be a bit late.

Maybe a shell extension or one of your media players where the assignment for all registered extensions
went wrong and now only a default icon is displayed. I'd check GOM first...

I'm not using GOM. Those were simply extracted icons from the GOM executable.

However you gave me an idea...

EDIT: I went into Windows 10 settings, went to Apps > Default apps, and forcefully reset ALL defaults. Basically resetting everything. I then restarted Explorer. And now it works!!

Awesome! That's what I'm looking for, haha. Simply troubleshooting ideas on what's going on. I guess this thread actually belongs more in the "Tips & Tricks, Questions & Answers" than anything. Anyway, thank you! (And why does Windows 10 can be so annoying...)

The odd thing is the default app for images was still Windows Photo. That never changed. Windows 10 is so inconsistent...
