Error opening file for writing: [XY update can't be installed!]

Post by GUIguy »

Downloaded latest update and executed. Of course, I closed XY.

Then the errors:
error writing.png
error writing.png (18.26 KiB) Viewed 3169 times
After clicking "Abort" got this:
install aborted.png
install aborted.png (28.9 KiB) Viewed 3169 times
I could cancel out, but couldn't update! :?:

I'm getting the same thing only with xycopy.exe. Just using today's.

Thanks, Dustydog...

I'm the first to blame myself, so it's good to see someone else getting this...

You might check Task Manager to see if any XY instance is still open.

Yup. Still can't. I double-checked task manager and only xy install was running. I've been testing from the Help > Online Support > Check for Updates.

So, in an effort to be complete, I just checked by going to the website and downloading the installable and the SAME thing happened. I guess I'm stuck at 18.10.0100 until it's fixed.

2017-08-02 12:17 PM: UPDATE: just installed successully on Win 10-64 on laptop. Arggggghhhhh.

After starting the XYplorer setup program, open a cmd prompt and type

Code: Select all

tasklist | findstr XYplorer
Hit enter afterwards, show a screenshot

Thanks, highend...But that did not show anything.

HOWEVER, the old adage "When in doubt, reboot!" came through once again. I rebooted (Win7-64) and it installed just fine.

Something unfindable was preventing the install. Reboot cleared it out.

Sorry for the bother, Don...

Dang. I have been having this same problem on one Win7 64-bit system. The best solution I've come up with is to right-click on installation exe file and select "Run as administrator". This appears to override whatever permission problems that exist.

My guess is there must be something corrupt in the registry or policy settings. On this system, I get the same error installing other programs as well. Ugh.

Update: Well, "Run as administrator" is not reliable. Do the reboot.

I won't go into too many details (I probably can't remember them all, for that matter), but my problem seemed to be some permission corruption (confusion?) involving trusted installer, among other things, and a reverted, then pending again Windows 10 Pro (Creator's) update. It went away after updating and doing the usual scans. I was getting all set to go through and reset any necessary folder permissions - but it was Microsoft's fault, and it went away.

Install Error

Post by dsyskowski »

Attempting to upgrade from 18.3 to 18.4.

Getting the error "Error opening file for writing", the file being the XYPlorer.exe.

I did not get this error on another PC. I have tried various things, but still get this error.

OS is Windows 10.

Including computer restart? Maybe XYplorer.exe file was still locked, for whatever reason.

Or try Windows Task Manager: it tells you which apps are currently running. And you can close them from there.

Yes, including after shutting down and trying again over multiple days.
