XYplorer not accessible during network copying

Post by thepusher »

While copying to and from a network drive, XYplorer can't be used until the copying is completed - the program is unresponsive. This seems to be specifically a XYplorer issue as I don't have the same issue copying to and from network drives in windows explorer. I have checked the configuration to determine if there are any settings that may be responsible; background operations is turned on in the file operations section.

Also, and potentially related, this version opens much slower and in general operates slower than the previous version that I used. It also has a lot of short hangs after file operations (when deleting files, copying files, moving files). I've only been using this version of XYplorer for a few weeks - I switched from version 10.4 x32, which seemed to be much faster. That being said, I've tried going back to the previous version and that version has the same issues with networked file operations.

Info:
XYplorer x64 17.90.0300
Windows 10 Pro x64
AMD FX 4170
16 GB ram
Realtek PCIe GBE network controller 1 Gb
Network drives: Synology Diskstation DS416 play
Trendnet TED-S16Dg gigabit switch

Intuitively I'd say this sounds like something that goes away with a Windows reboot.

So, do you still have that problem?

XYplorer is also often unresponsive when doing copy/paste operations on some network drives. I often copy/paste big files (1-10GB) at 100Mb/s (so it can take 15min to copy), and during that time, XYplorer usually hangs when I try to use it.

Use background processing: Configuration | File Operations | File Operations | Background Processing | Enable background processing

Then check the "Apply To" and make sure the scenario your XY hangs is included as well.

Can you verify that a background operation is really happening? You can tell from the status bar and the summary report:

It's correctly background.

I've tried to capture my screen to show you what happens. Browsing the network drive is really slow and XYplorer hangs every so often. You can see the clicks I made to browse the different folders, and the "sluggishness".

Doing the same copy operation using Windows Explorer doesn't make the browsing slow, nor Windows Explorer hang.

When I browse other folders located on my local drive, XYplorer behaves normally.

Does it help when you untick any of these:
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Auto-Refresh | Include network locations
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Auto-Refresh | Refresh during file operations

Sorry that I've been absent from my own post. After much online research and reviews of various windows explorer replacements, it would appear that XYplorer's performance issuses are the result of it not being multithreaded like other browsers. As a result, I've had to abandon XYplorer for Xplorer2, which, unfortunately, has been a downgrade in many features, but at the end of the day, I would rather trade bells and whistle features for basic functionality which I lost with XYplorer once I got my NAS and needed good network performance. Thanks.

Your choice, but I'm not sure about the analysis. XYplorer's background operation is not only multi-thread but multi-process. No way that one interfers with the other.

On the other hand I cannot explain what your video shows. :| So, good luck with your next file manager. :)

Perhaps I'm missing something, but the FAQ even states it's a single-threaded programs, unless your statement infers that the background operation runs as a separate application that is multi-threaded, or maybe the FAQ is old and the program has been re-written in a new language that allows multi-threading? Either way, thanks for trying.
