[partly solved] Incompatibility with Sagethumbs

Post by autocart »

many thumbs that are in landscape orientation are not displayed correctly (see attached shots: WE vs. XY).
this is already happening for a while but I only now found the nerve to report.
if I rotate it (context menu -> rotate clockwise) it displays ok in portrait orientation. If I rotate it back again (context menu -> rotate counter clockwise) then the thumb also displays fine in landscape but it does not do so from the very beginning.
Some of those pics are quite old and some are brand new.

EDIT: BTW, Windows Photo Viewer opens these files in landscape orientation but Gimp opens it in portrait orientation - weird.
It might also be connected to the camera: Samsung Galaxy S5 camera.
MDBU opens it in protrait as well.
and when I think of it. It actually should be portrait. That's how I took these photos. So, WE and WPV are INcorrect but at least the thumb is not broken there.

Re: BUG with thumbnails again

Post by autocart »

I found the underlying problem:
When I set the thumbs quality to "high speed" then the problem occurs.
When I set it to "fast" then the thumbs display correctly.

However, this still is a bug. We users would still like to be able to use "high speed". Therefore, please repair anyway. Thx.

Thx, Don, I would,

but when I try to attach a jpg or zip to the forum's PM message it only says "invalid file extension".
On the other hand I don't want to upload the original completely publicly here to the forum thread.
What am I supposed to do?

OK, got the pic, thanks!
Result: No problems with any of the quality settings. Windows 8.1, XY v17.50.0211. :|
(having this ticked: Configuration | Thumbnails | Auto-rotate thumbnails)

Are you using the cache? Maybe you should try to refresh the thumbs cache for that folder.

Thx for trying. I did a "View->Caches->Refresh Thumbnails". No difference.
I also tried putting it on a local path (since I normally work on a mapped network paths). No difference
I also tried a ::fresh; approach. No difference.

I tried to make a "neutral" photo which has the same problem and which I can upload here. But the size is too big to upload it (forum software does not allow picture of about 3.86 MB). So, I made that neutral picture with the same smartphone and same camera (front) but with lesser resolution and therefore smaller resulting file size (1.33 MB). It still causes the same thumbnail problem. Anybody, who wants to, can download it now and try. Please set thumbnail quality (in preferences) to "high speed" and then refresh all thumbnails (view -> caches -> refresh thumbnails). Thx for any help on this issue.

Thx for trying. Yes, I have that ticked too.

BTW, I am on Windows 7 x64, XY v17.50.0211.
Will try @ home on Win 8.1 x64 as well.

Don, another setting is causing the problem.

Fresh XY - O.K.
My default XY (very old!) - rotated, UP on the left.

I'll try to fond out what is causing it.

Gandolf, thx for testing.
Still, funny that on a fresh XY thumb is ok, because here it is also wrong on a fresh XY (latest version).
Could it be related to the OS? Or any codec packs or similar?
In case it makes a difference: I also have installed SageThumbs and XnView Shell extension.

Just to make sure: both test pics are shown in portrait orientation here, unbroken. In XY and in WE the same.

Also in a fresh XY because Configuration | Thumbnails | Auto-rotate thumbnails is ticked by default.

Re: Incompatibility with Sagethumbs

Post by autocart »

I found the culprit:

Sagethumbs is not 100% compatible with XY. I did not have it installed at home and all ok. I installed Sagethumbs and jpg-thumb in XY is broken at high speed quality. I uninstall Sagethumbs and all is ok again. Since I need Sagethumbs in order to have thumbs for Gimp images (xcf) I fortunately figured out this:
If I deactivate all jpeg creation in the Sagethumbs options then the jpg tumbs in XY work fine again, also at high speed, and I still have the xcf thumbs as well. I still need to confirm this at work now (thought, I had tried that already but obviously something must have slipped my concentration or else there is an additional Win7-8.1 difference affecting this, but let's see tomorrow).

Thx all for trying and helping. (I also changed the topic title.)

UPDATE:
@ work on Win7 x64 it still does not work.
Even stranger, those thumbs (taken with my phone) on high speed stay messed up even after I completely deinstalled Sagethumbs and rebooted.

Bottom line, I am out of ideas. I understand that you, Don, are not able to solve this now but thx for trying. Furtunately it works on "Fast" mode. So I stick with that now.
