Problem with Audio Preview/Mouse Down Blowup in 17.50

Post by jr5280 »

The new Audio Mouse Down Blowup feature works fine when XYplorer is freshly launched, but after some time, it (and the normal Preview feature) fails to work with any audio format and I get the following message in the status bar:

«!playing failed: Automation error::CoInitialize has not been called.»

Exiting and then relaunching XYplorer fixes the problem initially, but it again fails after some time (5 or 10 or 15 minutes), idle or active. I never used XYplorer's audio preview in any form before this release, so I don't know for sure that it's a new problem.

Windows XP (SP3)
Athlon XP CPU (with support for SSE but not SSE2 or above)

Never seen this error ever here.

What file types are you previewing?

PS: error has been reported once by another user: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10627

I'm previewing WAV and MP3 (using the Windows XP DirectShow filters) and FLAC and OGG (using Xiph.org’s Open Codecs for Windows and DirectShow). For troubleshooting, I uninstalled the Xiph codecs, but the problem remaines with only WAV and MP3 files.

PS—I just downloaded and ran a portable version of XYplorer 17.50, and it suffers the same problem. The main difference between my computer and the vast majority of computers in use is that its CPU lacks support for SSE2 instructions; is that possibly the culprit?

I would think the Codecs are causing the error.

So "Automation error::CoInitialize has not been called" starts at a random point in time, not at any particular file? And not after another error?

Currently, the only installed DirectShow codecs are those supplied with Windows XP SP3, but the error continues to occur when using only WAV and MP3 files.

Correct. The "CoInitialize" error seems to occur at random. I've turned off/deactivated/uninstalled every audio-related extra I could think of, but the error occurs even in the most stripped-down state. I can't determine what triggers the error.

There is another possibly related bug on my installation: the Mouse Down Blow Up preview feature works on file icons whether the "On file icons as well" option is checked or not—that is, I can't turn the feature off. A seemingly unrelated bug is that "Check for Updates" fails with the following message: «Check for Updates Failed - Could not reach https://www.xyplorer.com/version.php

Hm. A bit much, a bit weird. Already tried a Windows reboot?

Yes, several reboots … and all three problems occur with a fresh portable install of XYplorer. (The other two problems have been around for several versions, but I was too lazy to report them.)

Update: for Mouse Down Blow Up, I've been using the "On right button down" and "Stay Up" options. As previously noted, checking/unchecking the "On file icons as well" option has no effect in this case. However, when I use "On left mouse down," the "On file icons as well" option works as it should. Unfortunately, an "Automation error" still randomly occurs during audio previewing, although it's slightly different: «!playing failed: Automation error::ClassFactory cannot supply requested class».

Confirmed. Definitely a bug. Fix comes.

Did you already try the latest beta v17.50.0002? I changed something that *might* affect your error...

I've updated to v17.50.0100:

• the "On file icons as well" option now works properly when using "On right button down"

• I've been playing with Mouse Down Blow Up audio preview for an hour and haven't yet triggered an error; I'll report back later, good or bad, but so far so good …

• "Check for Updates" still doesn't work, but that's certainly unrelated; I'll report that in another thread.

Thanks for the fast and effective response … and for all the many features (many exclusive to XYplorer) that I never knew that I couldn't do without before you introduced them.

Final update: I've played with Mouse Down Blow Up audio preview in v17.50.0100 for a day now without any errors or glitches. Whatever you did in the maintenance update fixed the problem. Thanks again.

I am still having the same error on "Check for updates Failed" after updating to 18.20.0200. I've had this through many releases. I can easily go to the given URL using copy-paste, it shows the latest version number. I have continued to update manually. I'm on XP-SP3.

How do you trigger the check?
Are you using the freeware version, trial version, or do you have a license?

PS: In the next beta the error message will be more informative.

Isn't it this problem: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16694 ?

I believe that this will not be resolved for the XP users.
