Start up slower than winter molasses

Post by Magnus »

When I'm transferring files across my network at full network speeds, XYplorer can take up to one minute to launch. When it does, file transfers between local hard drive partitions (non-network) are slow to initiate, as are the displays of files moved. When my network transfers are idling XYplorere behaves as you might expect it to.

Here's my start up loadtimes:
XY ver: XYplorer 16.20.0100
OS: Windows 8.1 Windows 8, 64-bit
Loaded: 2016-02-12 19:29:16 in 54,696 ms

0 ms: 235 ms - Start Load
235 ms: 18 ms - Init Language
253 ms: 23 ms - Load Language
276 ms: 12 ms - Load Settings
288 ms: 3 ms - Init Custom File Icons
291 ms: 19 ms - Init Controls
310 ms: 45 ms - Init Graphics
355 ms: 11 ms - Init Tabs
366 ms: 25 ms - Create Info Panel
391 ms: 33 ms - Set Interface Font
424 ms: 21 ms - Init Panes
445 ms: 12 ms - Init Tree
457 ms: 3 ms - Tab Icons
460 ms: 0 ms - Load Catalog
460 ms: 1 ms - Load Tags
461 ms: 48 ms - Load Maxi Tree
509 ms: 0 ms - Init Custom Toolbar Buttons
509 ms: 5 ms - Init UDC and KS
514 ms: 22 ms - Load This Pane
536 ms: 0 ms - Load Other Pane
536 ms: 54,017 ms - Enum Servers
54,553 ms: 27 ms - Layout Window
54,580 ms: 0 ms - Layout Catalog
54,580 ms: 72 ms - Layout List
54,652 ms: 15 ms - Show Window
54,667 ms: 0 ms - Layout Catalog
54,667 ms: 28 ms - Layout List
54,695 ms: 1 ms - Init Menus
54,696 ms: - Load Done

MaxiTree: Rows=34, Nodes=38, Expanded=3, Servers=3
Check Existence of Subfolders in Tree: Yes
Pane 1: Items=2/2, Network, Pane 2: Items=32/47, Catalog: Items=8

Clearly Enum Servers is a problem. How do I fix that? Thanks in advance!

Do you have this checked? Configuration > Controls and More > Network > Cache network servers
Icon Names | Onyx | Undocumented Commands | xypcre

Yes I have that checked.

Network traffic really ties up XY. For example... I have split windows, one with local file, the other with network folder. If I drag to copy a local file (1 GB) to the network, XY is pretty useless until the transfer is complete. I can't navigate in either split view. This doesn't happen in MSFT Explorer or Q-Dir. But I want to use XYplorer.

Maybe there's a setting I need to change.

I noticed several "network" settings in the INI file, but I'm not sure at all what they do.

Startup time:
Configuration | Startup & Exit | No network browsing on startup
Make sure this item is checked

XYplorer is not usable while a network transfer happens:
XY version?
Custom copy / shell copy?
Split window means "Dual Pane" (F10) or do you mean 2 XY instances in single pane mode?

It was unchecked. That seems to have helped start-up

  • version 16.20.0200
  • custom copy (w/enable background processing)
  • dual pane (f10)

Can't reproduce (XY unresponsable when doing a network transfer)...

Try:
::fresh;
in the address bar and hit enter.

if you only configure your custom copy settings in that instance, does it show the same slowness during a transfer like your main xy version?

I'll try that later, since I'm in a 5-hour file transfer and XYplorer is unresponsive,

An additional note... this sluggishness (non-responive) is more than just file transfers within XYplorer.

Presently I'm transferring a multi-GB file from my local machine to a NAS (via Windows Explorer, not XYplorer). With XYplorer open, when I click on "Network", XYplorer becomes unresponsive. Along the bottom of the XYplorer it says "Enumerating servers done", yet I cannot click in either pane, or menu and get a response. Even Alt-Tab (in Windows) does not show XYplorer, and Task Manager shows XYplorer Status as "Not responding".

Basically, anytime there is heavy network traffic from the machine where XYplorer resides, it freezes if any pane or click involves Network, or networked files/folders.

Why not simply open another instance of XY while one is busy?

I can't reproduce that either...

I'm copying a 2,2 GB file from Windows Explorer to my local NAS at 25MB / sec (it's only an 800MHz arm processor running with debian linux :/) and XY behaves absolutely normal when I browse my network / network shares at the same time...

Zip your XYplorer.ini file and send it via e-mail to highend at posteo . me
Ofc you need to replace the at with @ and remove the spaces...

I want to test if it's really your config file that the cause of the problem...

That would work as long as I don't touch any network device.

Don will take a look why XY is nearly unusable when you copy a file over your network (I can confirm that's the case with your .ini file).

Ok, I found the setting that produces this behavior...

Configuration | Refresh, Icons, History | Auto-Refresh | Include network locations

Uncheck that item...
