Well - the way your promo material for 16.10 reads...

"Preview.

Completely revised the preview engine. Now you can preview Office, Audio, and Video files using the available preview handlers. A huge improvement over previous versions, notably for Office files and document formats like RTF, PDF, and XPS."

The way I read this - sounded to me like you made some massive breakthru and finally vanquished some long standing inability to see these file types in preview mode. You did not categorically state that any PDF preview success was based solely upon which PDF reader you happened to have installed.

Saying "available preview handlers" makes it sound like XY has had it's own for a while and you finally buffed them up to be really useful now.

That said - 16.10.0006 has been solid. But like a few others in here - I will probably disable this until it matures a bit. Keeping XY up and running (not crashed) is much more important to me than any ability to preview a PDF.

Cheers!

Ok, Adobe and Foxit have been reported to have issues under certain circumstances. The promo material is not the place for footnotes. And the prevhost approach will work around those 3rd party bugs in an elegant way.

It's also not the place to give an impression that something "just works" either.

When I read the blurb on 16.10 - I was very excited and installed right away. All the while automatically assuming that XY had it's own awesome (built in) preview capability.

My bad it seems (:

"(built in) preview capability" ? IMO the website states the opposite very clearly:
Note that registered preview handlers (32-bit) are needed for the new preview to work. These are usually installed along with the software you use to view and edit the file types in question. So, for example, to preview PDF files you need some PDF-viewer/editor software installed in your system (PDF-XChange is highly recommended). To preview MS Office files you need MS Office installed, to preview WordPerfect files you need WordPerfect installed, etc.

Understood. I just did not read that part.

Was too excited about the first paragraph.

OK, I will make a note on the website:

- Adobe Reader 11.0.13
- You preview a PDF using F11 (Floating preview), and it immediately (before even the preview is shown) crashes XYplorer.

That correct?

No. Using Reader 11.0.13 I moved into a folder of PDFs...and first did F12 to preview them. I previewed about 6 or 7 - all was good. I then tried F11 to look at a few in "floating" preview and left XY to do something else...when I came back a minute or two later - it was already crashed. Same behavior before with other builds.

But no "instant" crash here (yet).

OK, that's the already known in-the-background crash.

You only get that when you first do F12, then F11?

or also on F12 only?
or also on F11 only?

Will test and report back to see what's going on...this time without leaving the app at all.

And also please tell me whether the PDF preview is still showing in the moment of the crash, or whether it's closed, or it's showing another type of file (which type?).

Ok...here we go:

1. Used F12 to examine a series if PDFs in a single folder. Checked 10 out and then "closed" the preview by hitting F12 again. Waited a full two minutes. No crash
2. Used F11 to examine the same series of PDFs in a single folder. Checkout the same 10 and closed floating preview by hitting ESC. Waited a minute or two. No Crash
3. Used F11 to examine a folder of MP4's. Used the floating preview to skip thru a few of those. Seems no preview handler is installed so I saw nothing but a series of stills from the videos. Used ESC to close floating preview. Waited 30 seconds. Left XY alone to switch to Firefox - came back to XY - crash. with this detail:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: XYplorer.exe
Application Version: 16.10.0.100
Application Timestamp: 5677c737
Fault Module Name: pdfprevhndlr.dll_unloaded

Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

Seems the "pdfprevhndlr.dll_unloaded" is the cause. But an odd choice to preview MP4's...?

Thanks. I know that sequence very well. It is the exact way to crash the older version of PDF-XChange. Their current version fixed it.
You are using an old version of Adobe, but I assume their current version is not any better -- Adobe is not known for fixing bugs.

Anyway, until I publish the workaround, here is what you do:
Untick *.pdf in Previewed Formats / Office Files. You will then still get a thumbnail-like preview of PDFs, but not the crashes.

I turned off XY's Info Panel, and I haven't had a single crash in 5 days. Still running 16.10 on Windows 10. XY is playing very well with Microsoft Office 2013, PDF-Xchange Editor, everything.
