16.10 crashing often on Windows 10 64-bit

Post by DeiterF15 » 17 Dec 2015 18:31

I've noticed a big uptick in XY crashing, since I installed 16.10. I've been watching to see if there is a pattern to it, but I've not seen one (happens while opening files, moving files, navigating). Currently, about 20% of my actions in XY lead to a crash.

Yes, others are reporting this as well.

However, it does not seem to happen here. :eh: I still need a pattern. Or is it just with Win10?

Could it be related to PDF preview?

Not a strong correlation to Preview of PDF files. I tried multiple operations on PDFs with Preview selected (select, move, delete, copy), but only had one crash.

I wonder if you can get a crash without doing any PDF previews.

I did see one crash that might have been from Excel's handler when you first introduced preview 2.0 to floating preview. It seemed to be a conflict between Preview pane and Floating Preview, but it only happened once and I wasn't positive on the details or able to recreate it.

I'm out of the office until next year - thus I'm not using Windows and therefore no XY - so I'm unfortunately not able to help you on these crash-hunts. ;)

Last I checked Adobe's PDF preview handler could still crash XY, but that was prior to 16.10.

I am crashing everywhere in 16.10...just installed it about 30 minutes ago.

Most of the issues surround the new preview. Here is what I got when previewing an MP4...

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: XYplorer.exe
Application Version: 16.10.0.0
Application Timestamp: 56703217
Fault Module Name: sendmail.dll_unloaded
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bdb0f
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 575d8fb7
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 0a9e
Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

Not sure why a "sendmail" dll would be part of preview...but that's a privacy concern right off the bat.

I had about 3 crashes with PDFs too...seems pure textual PDFs are fine but anything with a hint of a graphic or any complexity crashed right away.

Seems this version is not ready for prime time. Unfortunate as XY has always been rock solid. Might roll back while we wait on fixes.

Also - I assume I cannot actual use "preview" to look thru a multipage PDF? I just previewed a 6 pager and cannot see a way to move past the first page?

Whats your default PDF reader?
The default PDF reader also handles the preview and thumbnails!

Mine is PDF-XChange Viewer and I can browse multipage PDF's!

I am using Adobe Reader 11.0.13. I refuse to use anything higher than v11 of Reader due to the bloat and useless operation of any of the newer version or Reader. Adobe has lost the plot on this app and I do not need the agony.

I am beginning to sense that this "feature" is solely dependent on which PDF app you have installed?

I was under the impression that this "big" feature was native to XY and that's why I was kinda excited about it.

If it's not native and instead relies on my installed reader for operation - that's kinda pointless. If I want to view a PDF using my default reader - takes about a second to do that with a guarantee of no crashing.

But if XY crashs doing a preview because it cannot find a way to get along with my default PDF reader - that is no feature in my book. It's a liability.

I think you are an exceptional case.

A) Fault Module Name: sendmail.dll_unloaded
WHAT???? Adobe's preview handler attempts to send emails???

B) You are the only one reporting such an amount of crashes. AFAIK all other reports were on crashes that only happened after these steps:
1) Previewed PDF
2) XYplorer window in the background
3) Wait 1-2 minutes

Generally, PDF preview will always be depending on 3rd party products (you cannot expect XY to become a native PDF viewer). It should not be any problem to embed the power of those products within XY -- that's what preview handlers are made for. And from my POV it is not very difficult to so. And it works great with most viewers (e.g. PDF-XChange, Sumatra, Foxit), and very bad with others (Adobe).

In the next version I will attempt to work around Adobe crashes using a new process, XYPrevHost.exe ...

Don,

What is more frustrating is that this issue does not occur on all PDFs - only selected ones. Other open great and as suspected - as you designed it.

However - my crash sequence bears no resemblance to your steps. When XY hits a PDF it cannot handle - it crashes immediately. No "window in background", no waiting 1-2 minutes etc.

EDIT: I take it back....I previewed a PDF just fine...moved to another folder, did some stuff...then left XY running..and launched Firefox...came back 10 minutes later and XY was crashed...with this backgrounder info...

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: XYplorer.exe

Look forward to the next builds. And - I am not married to Adobe Reader - I only use this version because it's fast and trouble free.

Also - I should mention -while this thread is focusing on Windows 10 - I am on Windows 7 Pro x64.

Cheers!

Well, this is a little tricky, so it might not be the *next* version in the strictest sense...

You do not tested XYplorer 16.10.0004 or higher yet ? I have got no pdf related crash (or any other crash) since XYplorer 16.10.0004.
My configuration: Windows 7 64 bit, Adobe reader 11.

I see application version: XYplorer 16.10.0.0 in your problem signature.

Well - I do not do interim builds. Just what's offered via the standard download channels.

I just grabbed 16.10.0006 - will try it.
