Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
As this is a pretty big change I'm creating a general topic for small conversation, issues, questions, etc.
Hopefully, my decision to put this in Bug Reports will be ill-suited, but I figured it might be the only place some people look for existing discussions/reports.
If a specific topic grows too large for this thread we can always have one of the moderators split it off into a new one.

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
Playing around some more today and testing out the various handlers that ShellExView says are available.
- Windows TXT Previewer (.bat.cmd.reg - as text)
Works but it is awful - kudos for XY's being much better. - Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler
Again it works but generally XY already does better.
One exception is XY claims "Cannot decode" anytime an MP3 contains ID3v2.4 tags, while this handler previews them fine. - Windows Font Previewer (.fon.otf.pfm.ttc.tft)
XY says "Cannot preview".
Granted WE doesn't show them in the preview pane here instead using a Preview verb to open another process.
*shrugs*
EDIT: Ah, the above is the case when viewing fonts in C:\Windows\Fonts.
For fonts outside of that folder WE shows the preview but XY shows the thumbnail instead of using the handler.
/edit
Off-topic; XY needs to up its fonts in list game. WE's thumbnails and actual names are pretty nice: EDIT: XY does show thumbs outside of C:\Windows\Fonts though: /edit
Also, having these in both the Web & Office (disabled) and Font (enabled) categories results in confusion and ugliness: - MAPI Mail Previewer (.msg)
Crashes XY after showing the less than useful:[Main Instruction]

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
get 'em in fonts too! rename windir\fonts\desktop.ini -> refresh thumb cache -> derename desktop.iniXY does show thumbs outside of C:\Windows\Fonts though:
ed: Don, why's there a black bg in font thumbs?

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
OK, thanks for keeping me busy.
But first of all: After 7 hours of hardcore Mark Watney coding I seem to have fixed the PDF crash. Well, at least here.
- Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler
OK: this will become handy in step 2 and 3 of preview 2.0....
- Windows Font Previewer
Works here in beta. Wait for upload...
- font thumbnails
I get them here, but with black background. Tried but failed to changed that. :\
EDIT: Yes, no thumbs in C:\Windows\Fonts\. Argh. Read "The Martian" and you know how my days are...
- MAPI Mail Previewer (.msg)
NO crash here. I get a message (wherever that comes from) -- see attached image. This message (says "no associated app found" bla bla) comes only once per session. Something is being smart here.

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
Nobody out there with Office 64-bit??? I'm sure I need the 32-bit handlers, but the question is whether MS is so nice to install them on 64-bit Windows.

Confirmed working here, though scrolling the preview with mouse-wheel does not. I suspect that's Microsoft's fault though.admin wrote:- Windows Font Previewer

This works now - I don't get any dialog like your's. It takes a few seconds and eventually renders the message correctly. (The preview itself kind of sucks but that's not on you.)admin wrote:- MAPI Mail Previewer (.msg)

Unfortunately, only there. I see no difference in behavior on PDFs in .0225.admin wrote:But first of all: After 7 hours of hardcore Mark Watney coding I seem to have fixed the PDF crash. Well, at least here.

I think so since also in Explorer (win8.1) the in-list font preview does not obey to the wheel.TheQwerty wrote:Sol 3

Yes! Tested with *.docx, *.xlsx, *.ppt and *.pptx!
Concerning *.pdf, now I get the MDBU, but is there any way you can increase the quality? It looks a bit blurred, but not in an uniform way.

2) " now I get the MDBU" ... what do you mean?

2) My fault, sorry - I could get the MDBU on pdf files even on previous betas. Anyway, any chance you can increase the quality of such previews?

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
Remove/untick "pdf" in Previewed Formats and you get the thumbnail preview with MDBU.Marco wrote:2) My fault, sorry - I could get the MDBU on pdf files even on previous betas. Anyway, any chance you can increase the quality of such previews?
Quality: If you mean the new previews I cannot do anything. The quality is determined by the size of the preview window.

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
[win 7.1 64-bit IE 11]
HTML with some javascripts embedded (here Google pagead & analytics)
throwing the notorious script errors at me, although disabled in IE advanced options (btw never noticed before, MS did split up this option into IE & "other applications").
Denying to run scripts is just ignored and XY starts chewing ...
showing the pagead at last whereas IE throws the script blocking warning instead

Re: Preview 2.0 - Generic Thread
Not nice, but nothing can be done here AFAIK (and it is not related to Preview 2.0).
