I recently upgraded to Windows 10 - 64 bit on my home PC. Clicking on the XYplorer icon doesn't start the software. An icon shows up in the notification area for a few seconds, then goes away. I tried running as an administrator and on occasion, it will run, but not consistently. Any idea of what could be going on? I have a paid lifetime license. Do you think that if I totally uninstall/reinstall that this would fix it?

Re: Windows 10 - 64 bit XYplorer won't run
Looks like a corrupt installation. Try to run a copy of XYplorer.exe from some temp folder. If it works (and it will) then there is something wrong with any of your XY configuration files. You can try to find out which, or completely re-install.

Totally removed, then re-installed, including Catalogs. It worked for a couple of days, now won't load again. Any ideas? By the way I also have in installed on a USB drive and that does work.

How to COMPLETELY reinstall XYplorer:admin wrote:You can try to find out which, or completely re-install.
- Exit XYplorer if running.
- Open the path where the troubled XYplorer is installed, that is, where XYplorer.exe resides. Use a file manager other than the XYplorer installation you're removing.
- If there is a startup.ini file here, open it in a text editor.
typical startup.ini file content:Note the location given in the Path key. This is the XYDATA folder.Code: Select all
[Appdata] Path=%AppData%\XYplorer - If there isn't a startup.ini file, then there should be a Data folder instead. Then this is the XYDATA folder.
- If there is a startup.ini file here, open it in a text editor.
- Backup! and delete this XYDATA folder.
- Just to be sure, go to %AppData% (C:\users\<username>\appdata\roaming) and rename the xyplorer folder there, if it exists, to something else.
- Uninstall XYplorer from control panel.
- Reinstall XYplorer.

Re: Windows 10 - 64 bit XYplorer won't run
This is still an issue on my PC. On occasion it works fine, but lately can't get it to start at all. I also have it installed on a USB drive with a separate shortcut to that, which won't work either.
I did note at one time when installing an update the Norton's (updated Comcast release) flagged the install. I clicked to allow it and it worked for a bit after that. Now doesn't start at all.

There is no reason why XY should refuse to run at all if you virus scanner didn't put into quarantine...

Re: Windows 10 - 64 bit XYplorer won't run
Just wanted to let you know that I finally tracked the cause of Xyplorer not running was the Comcast Norton's Security Suite that I had running. Evidently it would quarantine the exe without asking my approval. I tried to make Norton not take this action, but nothing worked, except uninstalling Norton (using their uninstall program). Now Xyplorer works great, as it had for several previous years. Had trouble in the past with Norton and other paid software, but this only started after I upgraded to Win 10. For now I'm running Windows own AV until I can find a better alternative.
Thank you,
Bob

Thanks for the info!
(I don't have the time to list all the words that come to my mind when I think of the AV industry.)

Re: Windows 10 - 64 bit XYplorer won't run
I'm running Norton Antivirus on Windows 10 Pro on 2 computers without any issues. Though I had the latest version of Norton when I upgraded to 10, I was forced to install a new or different version (I suppose compatible with 10). Currently I'm using the latest Norton Anti-Virus v22.5.5.15. I do have the XYplorer folder and subs all excluded from scanning. Though I have Comcast as well, I'm using a normal store purchased version however (via Amazon download). My license for the Norton Anti-Viru runs out in a month so I purchased a new one again via Amazon. This time I had to purchase the Norton Security Suite which I really did not want, but it's getting hard to find the solo Norton Anti Virus anymore. I paid $19 for 5 PC package around the Black Friday timeframe. Now it's listed for $36 not bad for 5 devices. Hope that helps.
Re: Windows 10 - 64 bit XYplorer won't run
My version of Norton's was the Comcast free version. Maybe that had something to do with it. Not sure how often the free version gets updated and whether it was fully compatible with Win 10. Norton's also had an issue with my MalwareBytes Pro and a paid copy of an estimating software called Planswift.
