Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
I am unable to accomplish a simple task: creating a file with a name which includes Unicode characters.
I am able to do the following:
1. View/manipulate an existing file with Unicode characters in file name.
2. Create a new.txt and paste the string (with Unicode characters) as file name.
3. Create a new empty text file and type a string (with Unicode characters) as file name from the desktop/Windows Explorer.
However, I am not able to just simply:
4. Create a new empty text file and type a string (with Unicode characters) as file name from the XYplorer.
For example, I cannot type "α test.txt" which has alpha as first character, or, "CH₃.txt" which has subscript 3 as third character. Any suggestions?
I used: Windows 7 (up to date) / XYplorer 14.80.0000 (new download/portable)

What happens when you try?

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
It defaults in either the basic latin character on the keyboard or a "?" which then fails as an illegal file name.
Thanks.
Thanks.

This has already been reported before. See http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... de#p110694
There's also a workaround: copy-paste.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
Anyway, this is a very basic function of file managers to label a file in a standard manner.
I hope it is actively being addressed. Unicode is not just for non-Western language input.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks, you are correct that it was posted/confirmed back in August 2014. I searched but not well enough.
Notwithstanding, copy and paste is not a work-around, but it proves the fail.
Folks shouldn't need to copy and paste from another file manager, and especially with many files. What would be the point?

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
Wasn't that due to a Windows problem that is solved now? See http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 765#p80765

That worked when I used copy-paste.
But enven at that day, typing doesn't work.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
@Sammy and jackpots: can you confirm that this happens in Photoshop or Proshowgold?
If yes, then the problem (typing Unicode chars become "?") seems to be caused by "the target application uses system control keys such as [ , ]".
The developer of Unikey (Vietnamese typing software) admitted this issue and have to channel the input through clipboard. Here's what he said (sorry, Vietnamese only):

Your characterization is a bit different from what was stated. Please refer to the original post.binocular222 wrote:@Sammy and jackpots: can you confirm that this happens in Photoshop or Proshowgold?

In my case, I use no other than that from Microsoft, my OS is configured US-EN. The Unicode characters work in all my programs—even in Q-Dir 5, office apps, etc.—except this. Also as above, it works in my browser in these forums. E.g.: αδε′ (prime)λ∞, etc.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
I mean there's only a certain kind of programs suffer from this issue. Mine is EN-US and Unicode works everywhere except for XYplorer, Photoshop, Proshowgold.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
I installed a Greek keyboard for testing this. Result: No problem. See screenshot.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
Thanks. That was helpful.
1. Can/will you point to the source of the keyboard layout file so that I may install and try?
2. I will try to upload my keyboard layout file with an associated image layout for you to test, if you wish, as the problem still exist:
A) All other programs (MS Office, SoftMaker Office, NotePad++, Photoshop, Windows desktop/Explorer, Q-Dir, Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird, Outlook, Windows Command Console with unicode on, Foxit PDF, Sumatra PDF, Document Management System, QuodLibet, among others checked.) that I tested work as expected except XYplorer. Please see the screen captures that show the difference between XYplorer and Q-Dir.
B) The Unicode characters used are not only Greek, though I think your test image was just an example.
C) XYplorer also seem to have a problem in displaying some/all file properties when those files are within a folder with some (?) Unicode characters in the file name. Please see the screen capture.
On a side note, I hope we don't ultimately get to a situation where I say, "We have a black swan" and like many products/forums say, "Mine is white, so you are wrong." It doesn't seem that way so thanks in advance.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
Hello,
Checking for decision/update/progress/suggestions/practical work-around. Any news?
Is this classed as a bug? If so, I will just wait via the normal update process.
Thanks.

Re: Typing file name which include Unicode characters FAIL
This is not a temporary bug, we have to find a solution.
The only workaround I know is channelling through clipboard.
P.S: VNese keyboard: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unikey/ ... p/download typing "naams" should become "nấm" but XY return "n?m"
