Slow startup

Post by raananb »

XYPlorer (13.80.0100) takes almost a minute to come up on my i7 8.1 laptop. I raised this issue in the past, but the problem persists. Any chance of improvement?

My guess is that XY is trying to establish connection to a networked computer and does not display the local tree until the network scanning is done (successful or not).

Maybe the network part should be set as an idependent thread, allowing to display the local contents sooner?

I am ready to test a development version.

General reply: Yes, it is surely some stale network path somewhere in your config. I will upload a tip for how to handle this issue to the FAQ ASAP.

Maybe unrelated, but i found the startup got slightly slower when the "Show 64-bit context menu" option became available.
(Win 7 HP 64-bit, with no network involvement, and it might be only the first time XYplorer is run after the system is booted, so might be a Windows issue.)

Whatever the factors are, there cannot be any relation to the "Show 64-bit context menu" option.

As XYplorer does more and more, is there a chance that the program becomes bigger and thus takes more time to load?

Normally yes, but since I'm optimizing it all the the time it actually getting faster. I currently load it in around 350 msecs average time.

The current configuration is a much more important factor in load time than the size of the exe. And there are always the same two things that can really slow things down:
1) Network
2) Anti Virus

I disabled Avast but this did not improve xyPlorer startup time, which is still about 45 secs.

Maybe you have a very very very large folder displayed on startup?

No large folder and no raw view.

There is, however, a local (wifi) network connection (which may be dormant), and it really looks like xyPlorer waits until it decides whether it is connected or not before displaying the local files.

I've experienced some issues in slow initial display. Typically XY starts in about 400 ms, but on occasion it starts slow. Most of the time, at least in my case, the slow starts turned out to be shutting down with pane 2 (even though it may not be visible/displayed) set to some folder which is either not available (like a flash drive or a very large folder). So now I typically shut down with both panes set on the root of C: drive, even if I'm not currently using pane 2 or Dual pane, and start-ups are more consistently fast. Maybe that shouldn't be the case, but I can't otherwise explain it.

On my Win 8.1, WIndows Explorer detects the remote workstation without too much effort; sometimes a delay is needed for the workstation to provide its file structure.

MyLanViewer also detects the remote station.

However, 'Network/Browse for Network Server...' in xy opens up a window which does not show the remote workstation which Windows Explorer displays.

Browsing (... button) in the Catalog 'Edit Item properties' dialog does not show the remote computer either. However, entering the \\REMOTE\Folder directly in the dialog results in a shortcut which works.A click on the shortcut in the catalog does reach the remote folder...

Maybe this can be of some help.

Try this: Configuration | Startup & Exit | No network browsing on startup

Some improvement, but not really spectacular.

On my laptop, 32 seconds instead of over 40 earlier.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 express opens in 2 s and loads a projet in another 3 s.

LibreOffice loads up in 2 s.

I checked the disk : wdc wd7500bpkt 80pk4t0 7200rpm, average latency 4.2ms, 16MB cache.

On my desktop, 2 s startup for xyPlorer.

Anything else you want me to try?
