Not saving history list

Post by Gandolf »

Only the most recent 5 entries appear to be saved in the ini file between TrackerV3 sessions, hence most of the history list is lost. I haven't checked if this has only appeared since v3.60.0024 when you added the 2 second location stop-over (which, incidentally I like). Also the History list seems to hold 24 entries and not 16 as the help file indicates.

If I add entries to the ini file they are read by TrackerV3, so it would appear to be the saving of the history list that is at fault.

I modified the ini file to be:

Count=10
Hist0=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (04)\
Hist1=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (06)\
Hist2=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (08)\
Hist3=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (10)\
Hist4=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (12)\
Hist5=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (04)\
Hist6=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (06)\
Hist7=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (08)\
Hist8=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (10)\
Hist9=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (12)\

Having opened TrackerV3 and then closed it the ini file became:

Count=5
Hist0=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (04)\
Hist1=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (06)\
Hist2=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (08)\
Hist3=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (10)\
Hist4=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (12)\
Hist5=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (04)\
Hist6=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (06)\
Hist7=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (08)\
Hist8=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (10)\
Hist9=C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Gordon\_Special\2003\April\04-30\New Folder (12)\

The count number is a bit of a give away!!!

I don't know why the smilies have appeared - it should be an 8

Recent 5: that's by design, but why? I try to remember... probably to speed up startup. I think, with the fast computers nowadays, we can allow for some more...

24 entries and not 16: mine does 24! Check again.

For me 2 secs appears a bit too long. What's your impression?

And we did, see the edited and freshly uploaded last BETA (the change was too small to post a new text). By the way, the install package lost another 100 KB due to better compression, so I went down from 800 to 600 in 2 days :D

What I was trying to indicate was that the help file is incorrect:

"Go Menu Commands

...The history stores up to 16 entries."

but mine does in fact store 24 (same as yours).

I'm not sure. A lot of my files have very similar names so it takes a little longer to read the folder contents before moving on, so a shorter time might result in folders not required being added to the history.

I have seen it now!

Ah, the bloody help file. The whole Go Menu section is out-of-date. Thanks for giving me work I don't like :wink:

An idea. Another item in the Help menu that opens History.txt in the default text editor. That way a user can easily see the latest updates.

Currently History.txt is not distributed with the installation. I could link to http://www.trackerv3.com/history.htm -- however that's not the BETA history.

Because I've not done an installation for so long, only updated with BETA's, I hadn't realised History.txt was only with the BETA versions and not with the installer. Linking to web sites from a help file is not something I particularly like.

Speaking of the installation; does it work alright everywhere? I'd especially like to hear some Win98 experiences!

I certainly had no problems with XP (you would have heard quick enough if I had!!).

I think a link from the "Upcoming Releases" page to the "Tips & Tricks" page regarding removing the old (now redundant) installation information would be a good idea. Knowing that you were using a new installer I automatically uninstalled first to remove the old installer information, but not everybody may know it is advisable to do this.
