"Race" is meant as in two separate processes accessing the file and if the wrong one wins the race you see that error.

Thanks Ralph. I suppose it could've been "rare" also since it's not happening consistently.

If you can confirm that you never get a crash when the preview tab is not active, then I would have a blood trace...

That's what I'm sensing at this point. However, with the preview tab active I just dragged a file with the method described above and it did not crash. Because this issue is so intermittent give me a week or so to continue dragging with and without the preview tab active and I'll report back.

Thanks.

I've been having occasional "crash on move" for a couple months now, and it just happened again. Only about once a week and not repeatable so I held off on describing it.

This happens similar to the current report: on the same partition, and primarily when I drag a folder into a sibling folder. The files being moved are typically about 1MB and there may only be a couple dozen files in the folder I'm moving.

However, these folders are in or are being moved into a folder with thousands of such files. I never have the problem with smaller collections. So I think that's the one real clue I can give you.

Windows 10 x64, XY 23.70.0100. I have background ops enabled, with default handler XYCopy. I'm working in a List pane (not the Tree). In the Size column, "Show folder sizes" is disabled. Not sure what the "Preview tab" is, but I have no previews evident.

It just happened again, now with XY 23.70.0102. No new files eg crash report were created in the XY folders. I may be able to repeat this if you want to try a debug.

This is still happening to me but it is truly inconsistent. Sometimes a move to the same directory causes a lock-up and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it's a move to a different directory that locks up. And sometimes it doesn't. Doesn't seem to matter what the file format is. I'd guess that 90% of the time I'm dragging to the new location. Using with a right-click/hold drag as I can never remember when it default moves and when it default copies.

Currently on 23.70.

I understand. It's just so inconsistent that I truly can't get a handle on being able to reproduce it "on demand." Which would at least give you a shot at tracking it down.

Things like this can have many causes, e.g. a slightly defect mouse wheel that fires a notch out of nothing in the wrong moment. Hard to replicate intentionally.

Preview Pane is always displayed. It appears to happen only when working with PDF files. Perhaps 20+ times per day crashes (XY just goes away without warning, no messages or warning) -- only eventlog. Appears in my case to happen 98+ percent of the time when working on one of the PDF files in the XY file list view (which one of them is displayed in the Preview Pane). While working on one of these PDF files in another application and performing an update to the PDF file, XY closes (or so it appears to be linked). The reported Exception code is always 0xc000041d or 0xc0000005

What's your PDF preview handler?

Code: Select all

text get("previewhandler", "pdf");

Mine doesn't seem only limited to PDFs. I've experienced it with ZIP, RAR, MP3. I often have the preview tab open in the info panel. But not all the time.
PDF preview handler:
GUID: {1B96FAD8-1C10-416E-8027-6EFF94045F6F}
DefaultName: FoxitPDFPreviewHandlerHost Class
DisplayName: Foxit Preview Host for PDF Preview Handler

MP3 preview handler:
GUID: {031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}
DefaultName: Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler
DisplayName: @wmploc.dll,-144

It's still too inconsistent to provide a reliable report, but thanks for not giving up.

The first occurrence of XY having the abnormal termination Application Errors in the EventLog are for XY version 23.40.0.1 (for me). Always, same module and same Exception code: 0xc000041d [OR] 0xc0000005

It doesn't appear to have abnormal termination Application Errors with v23.00.0313 (2022-05-23) {prior version installed on my system to v23.40.0.1 when they first are reported (on my system)].
