Screenshots
Let's start this new forum with a generic thread: Screenshots.
For me a good screen shooter is essential software which I'm using all the time. And that's FastStone Capture in my case.

Re: Screenshots
And I've been using http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/ since I was back on Win98! I'm still using an older vers (3.6) because it does everything I need but is a bit less resource hungry on this ole W2K sys.admin wrote: And that's FastStone Capture in my case.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Re: Screenshots
I like FastStone Capture and its workflow! but last time I checked it was lacking a lot quality-wise for captures on Windows Vista/7 (Aero stuff). It's really hard to find an application with a decent UI which is not too complex, too minimalistic or ugly, bloated, expensive (tried a lot of them like: SnagIT, SnapDraw, ZScreen, 7Capture, ...).
Long story short I like and use WinSnap and I hold a lot of hope for the upcoming version 4 because it is still lacking a bit on the quality side (capture of native shadows and translucency).

Re: Screenshots
PicPick is my favourite. And Greenshot as second. Both free and can be made as portable.
Re: Screenshots
tried many, stopped on FastStone Capture. best at any criteria for me.

Re: Screenshots
Ditto: FastStone Capture but I'm also trying out ScreenshotCaptor from Mouser at DonationCoder.com
Also, related software:
"SysExporter utility allows you to grab the data stored in standard list-views, tree-views, list boxes, combo boxes, text-boxes, and WebBrowser/HTML controls from almost any application running on your system, and export it to text, HTML or XML file."

Most of his apps are very good.

Re: Screenshots
I've been using SnagIt for a LONG time, and continue to use it. It's not free, but it works really well for me. I especially like the power of the editor, though I *do* wish it would do a gradient fill... I use the SnagIt editor for almost all of my image editing. (incidentally, I also use Camtasia Studio for video screen capture for making webcasts, etc).
I haven't tried FastStone, but it sounds like it might be worth checking out!

Re: Screenshots
PicPick is nice, but I have switched to ZScreen months ago. Uploading, processing, effects, continuous development, a nice IRC channel and great dev support.
Also, feature requests are taken and fulfilled quite fast.

Re: Screenshots
+1 for Screenshot Captor for more heavy-duty screenshot taking. As a quick tool I have been using Greenshot receltly -- it may be .net, but it does what it does well.
Re: Screenshots
I've been using SnagIt and Camtasia for years, as well. Thumbs up for both.
SnagIt has a great feature to capture the full screen even if it has partially scrolled below your monitor view.

Re: Screenshots
FastStone Capture can do that too.GregH wrote:SnagIt has a great feature to capture the full screen even if it has partially scrolled below your monitor view.

Re: Screenshots
PicPict will do all things that any one need
Re: Screenshots
Can someone please say which of the mentioned (or other) screen shot tools is:
* native, i.e. not .net (or other framework) dependent
* portable
* satisfies the needs of its present user
* has flexible snapshot area selection possibility
* has basic editing possibilities (like: ellipses, arrows, shadow edges)
* is perhaps even free (but need not be!)
For quite some time I have been using Greenshot, but it is .net dependent. After I recently had to install .net on a notebook just because of Greenshot, which afterwards made me loose two hours or so for .net updates, I am feed up with such things.
Thank you!
