Hi,
I have just replaced a Big Tower by an "ASRock X300" Deskmini System (almost NUC). Added a Ryzen 5 5600G, Noctua cooler, 2x8GB SO-DIMM and a decent M.2 drive ... I am so happy :-) ( €550)

Don't be scared with migration, see what I did:

I have removed my 500GB SSD Systemdrive from the tower ( running Windows 10 with an Intel Proc. )
Used AOMEI Partition Assistant 9.6 to clone this SSD drive to a new 500Gb M.2 NVMe
Connected the M.2 to the new system and voila it comes up and running, even with the AMD Proc.
just some cosmetics and ready !!

It took really a while booting due to installing the needed drivers, don't get nervous :-)

Not here. I come from Win8.1 and go to Win10. I will have to set up my system from scratch. Countless apps to install, register, unlock and reconfigure. Ahhhhhhh...

Supposedly you can "upgrade" from 8.1 to 10 with some kind of tool, keeping all your alread installed software? I thought so.
But a clean fresh install is certainly better. All the best.

Yah, stick with Windows 10, Pro if you can. I just build a W11 Pro laptop for my wife, and the W11 File Explorer and taskbar totally suck. She hates it. I will build her a W10 Pro probably this summer. It's difficult/expensive to get but the LTS Enterprise versions are the most-stable and don't break every 6 months.

I didn't catch what NUC you got, but my wife's 11th-gen i7 is crazy fast (on low core-count tasks). It's comparable to my overclocked 10th-gen i9 desktop (discrete graphics).

I recommend partitioning your drives with an OS drive (C:), a data/Documents drive (D:), and an Erase (E:) drive. I make OS images of C: only after significant OS changes. Right-click and change the Location of Documents, Pictures, whatever to D:. I do nightly backups of D:. Change your swap, %TEMP% environment variables, browser cache, etc., to E:. E: is throwaway. Who cares if it gets corrupted or lost. Actually, my E: is a RAM drive.

I am a total hardware geek, so hit me up for any questions. For your old desktop, I'd recommend putting in a SATA drive bay and running a few leftover drives for various test OSes including your old Win 8.1.

Get yourself the biggest screen you can for coding. Min 2560x1440. I only use Samsung SSDs. I have a few QVO but would only use their EVO TLC (or Pro) going again since the price diff is so little. TLC = 8 bits/cell. QLC = 16 bits/cell.

Well, for Windows File Explore replacement there's a fantastic alternative.

I made a test upgrade to try it by myself. Old taskbar behavior can be restored with ExplorerPatcher. The, even 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works again.


It worked when I tested it last week. Nevertheless, I'd planned to restore W10 anyway because for me W11 is still a alpha release overall. So I did.

If SSD is used, it is recommended to back up data to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) frequently.


I have been using SSD since 2013. I have used several SSD: 240G, 500G and 1TB. The 1T SSD used at the end of last year had problems, and more than a dozen files stored in the SSD could not be read because of a large number of ECC errors.


My files are backed up in three HDD (that is, all files is backed up in three different places), so there is no loss. I replaced a new 1T SSD.

This is a very nice NUC! I have basically the same, except older 8th gen Bean Canyon. You have 3 HDMI 2.0-capable outputs, so you should be fine for any reasonable monitor setup. Actually, the HDMI 2.0 is not the critical part but actually the 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 capability whether HDMI or DP. Intel had been lagging on HDMI 2.0 support for years.

These little Intel NUCs can get noisy when pushed hard, but they have (or had, at least) pretty configurable fan/cooling curves that you can configure in the BIOS.

Comes with Pro, too, which gives you the Group Policy Editor which allows you more tweaks and/or disable annoying features.
