forum etiquette: how to say thanks

I find posting a reply just to say thanks is kind of spamming and wasting the time of person who the thanks is given to
should I say thanks each time I get help or a reply to something I have post?

In my opinion it's exactly the opposite: returning a thanks (or more formally, expressing one's gratitude) is never spam.
It is a matter of course, and the least one can give back for the time spent by others in order to help me.

To me a "thanks" is also a confirmation that my message has been received. It kind of closes the matter. Without "thanks" it feels like an open end.
I would agree, however, that replying to the "thanks" again with "you're welcome" is borderline-excessive.

A suggestion for yusef. I've gotten into the habit of adding [STATUS] prefixes to topic titles after a resolution. Doesn't help much if you're not the topic creator.
