F11 vs Winamp

Post by SkyFrontier »

Often when I F11 on XYplorer, the preview opens with Winamp on top of it.
Couldn't find a clue inside Winamp config.
Hints...?

Often, not always? Hard to track... Does WinAmp define global hotkeys? Version of WinAmp?

I can't really help much since I haven't had Winamp installed in forever, but you might want to check out MusicBee. Free, fast, beautiful player, super customizable, super powerful, and very light on resources (currently using 74 MB of RAM for a 15k file library).

Once I'm attached to a program, it's hard for me to change it. I'm loyal - even for VERSIONS of an app. If it's working, don't try to fix it... (XY excels on improving features, adding them, etc, in such a manner it's an easy exception to this rule)
But in this case I will consider leaving years faithful music player... (oh!, just rediscovered the beauty of visualizations!)
Thanks much for the tip, ksarnelli. If it's portable, it's an immediate deal.

Yep, a portable version is definitely available. It's similar to XY in that it's developed by one guy who listens to feedback from users.

Oh...and it has some great visualizations too

"welcome to the MusicBee portable 2.4 setup wizard", == "welcome to the setup installation of MusicBee portable".
Really?!

I'll go for the RC3 instead, then.
Internal functions must be... portable. Changed my mind again. :veryconfused:

Sky,
let me know what you're after - what features. Internet radio and scrobbling? Audio functions like loops, slowdown, pitch shift etc? Tagging, playlists, compatibility with mobile devices? Lyrics and cover art and community sharing? Skins and customizable interface?

I have not found a suitable player for myself. Most freeware turns out buggy, slow to load, poor sound quality despite using the same codec. The good stuff is not portable. That's why I carry a whole lot of different tools with me. If I know your requirements I might be able to help you out.

For starters, try AIMP - it's got a much better reputation than MusicBee, and its interface comes closer to what you are used to - coming from WinAmp I mean.

 I used to carry it around for a few years - probably the most popular with the most skins (some great stuff provided by Deviant Art designers) and the most plugins. I remember having bookmarks and waveform seekbar, pitch and speed shifters, replay gains and converters and CD rippers....

Gotta be the most customizable, imo - which made me spent way too much time on it (just like XY  )
Startup got a bit slow - probably because of all of my plugins.

here's another fan of foobar hooked on It's customizability.
With the columnsUI plugin alone, you can turn the GUI on its head twice and give it a new hairstyle
And it has it's own version of *drum rolls* scripted custom columns! (probably supplied by a plugin)
Another essential feature is the ability to load/save album art from a given folder, so I don't have to have any of the albumart.jpg-folder.jpg spam in my music folders.

Yes, although I am getting mixed feelings about "very fast" - it certainly used to be 2 years ago, but meanwhile - with more features and better graphics - the speed award returns to other players. Still a great player, though, A-B loops and wave-seek display ...

Since we're down to the no-frills, plain-as-can-be department, try these if you care about quick startup - such as from XY listview via POM/PFA:
Nothing opens faster afaik: http://www.igorware.com/small-player?referrer-ver=0.8.0
Try the Intro-Scan + adust its settings: http://mpesch3.de1.cc/

Not sure what you mean - It's fully portable. The "installer" simply extracts the archive wherever you want and all settings are contained in that folder (it doesn't actually install anything anywhere else, no registry, no uninstall, etc). It works the same way as portable apps from portableapps.com.

EDIT - On a side note, I used Foobar for many years before I switched to MusicBee. You Foobar guys should check it out.
