Task Scheduler alternative

Post by bdeshi »

what is a good choice for an automated taskrunner, that supports a wide variety of triggers like certain file/folder creation/modification, program open, etc?
and customizable!

okay, since I don't want to sell my house, I guess xstarter is a, mh, good choice. :kidding:
But I found another program meanwhile: http://www.automationworkshop.org/

Right now I just need to run a command whenever a folder changes, but you know, extra triggers can't hurt, as long as they're not attached to a weapon pointed at you.

Finally I found what I wanted to share:
http://www.datamystic.com/filewatcher
(AFAICR they have other software that may interest you)
Once I placed an order for it but transaction went wrong, so I have no hands on experience. Support told me it could monitor a folder and automatically move contents to sequentially auto-numbered folders if a certain amount of items is reached. They even provided a script for the task.

Are there any portable alternatives. One I know of is FreeByte Task Scheduler - but not impressed by it

Well...
  • xStarter Tasks are portable once you compile them (and make them independent from the main software - the software itself isn't portable sadly).
  • Filewatcher does offer a portable license, so that should do, but it's a little bit more specific and expensive than xStarter.
Didn't read any more about portable Tools right now.

Need a portable softy so xstarter is out.

FileWatcher can only schedule tasks based on files if I am not wrong

Smooth Program Scheduler - http://www.xemico.com/scheduler/ is kind of semi portable. It keeps everything in appdata - a wrapper script should suffice, but hunt still continues

I'm going to look into these... Thanks...

The one bad thing I've found when using task-scheduler is when I export and try to import to a different computer, I need to edit the XML to alter the author computer because all of that information is filled out so on import you'll need to change the domain / user-id anyway instead of being able to use %UserName% or other EnvVars as place-holders....

AND, you HAVE to Import AND Export all tasks individually which is a major bust...
