Windows 10

Post by klownboy »

It was good to hear yesterday that the upgrades to Windows 10 will be free if you're running a legitimate copy of Windows 7 or 8.1. From ZDNET Tech...
If you own a PC running a properly licensed copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 10 after it's officially released.

That free-upgrade offer is good for one full year after the release of Windows 10 -- a detail that confused some observers. What happens after that year ends?

One thing's for certain: you won't have to pay Microsoft an additional license fee. Microsoft's business model isn't changing. The upgrade is a perpetual license that's good for the supported life of the PC, and there's no plan at this time to offer Windows as a subscription.

It's possible, but unlikely, that Microsoft will charge for upgrades after the first year. That decision hasn't been made yet, and likely won't be any time soon.

Wow. They're giving it their all to make everyone forget about the WEight as fast as possible.
A whole OS for free? From Micro$oft? Undreamable a couple years ago.

I couldn't watch the live streams yesterday, but what I could read this morning makes me really excited.

Good ideas, good direction, sort of a coherent, compelling vision for the next years.
/e: the universal apps hopefully turn out to become that 'grand' concept it promises to be.

I start to really like the "new" Microsoft!

As Sammay says, it seems unthinkable a few years back, but I think they're starting to wake up and listen. If they continue to make improvements on the Surface Pro as they have with each new version, 1, 2, and 3, I may just consider Surface 4. I've been holding off on buying a new laptop. I don't think Wate is so bad, at least WateOne, even with all the bad rap it received. Most of it was undeserved. No one likes drastic change but from what I'm reading W10 will resolve much of that.

Still so odd how it's Windows 10 and not 9. But I can get that they really want to distance themselves away from 8. Either way, wow this is great news!! Windows 10 looks sleek as well and omg, the Start Menu!! :biggrin:

Didn't take time to look it up but there was a widely published code snippet from M$ (I think) showing that many pgms check OS vers for Win 95/98 by looking at first char only so would break that and that was reason for going to 10.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Ken, that's cool because it's absolutely spot on. :D

The only reason keeping me from getting a surface is that the tablet part still is a 100 gr over my upper weight limit. But I'm quite confident the series 4 will be a take on my side - compared to my iOS-iPad it's simply much too appealing to have a tablet running a full-fledged modern windows.

Drooling ...

It's apparently widely used in the Java world: https://searchcode.com/?q=if%28version% ... ws+9%22%29

Code: Select all

    String os = System.getProperty("os.name");
    if (os.startsWith("Windows 9") || os.equals("Windows Me")) {
        // whatever...

I have been using 10 ever since it has been available and like it a lot.

Before I surrender my 4 Windows 7 licenses I want to see what Microsoft is up to re: paying.

There's already an official statement: within the first year upgrading is free.

I know but I'm wondering about year two. Of course, at my age, there may not be a year two. :)

As far as I understood, if you decide to upgrade at day 368 after release you simple have to buy a new retail license. But at your age, you should contemplate not to wait that long anyway. :P

When it's there:
1) I don't want to upgrade - I want a new install of 10 (I never upgrade! Clean!)
2) after 13 months the installation crashes: re-install? Buy??

OK :arrow: I will not believe much before I see it :roll:

This is a new Microsoft... http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10 ... TRE17cfd61
In a separate interview, Meyerson told Reuters that the company plans to deliver free Windows 10 upgrades to all customers, even those running pirated versions of Windows. "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," Meyerson told Reuters. And, it's this summer.
