Always showing folder size in XY (Confing > Tree and List > Show folder size) significantly slow down XY because XY re-querry the size whenever you navigate around.
Good news is there's a softwear that make displaying the size almost instant (it cache the size so that it only have to querry each folder size in the 1st time)

Generally, I just turn on Show Folder Sizes in Xyplorer when I need to.

Sometimes, I like to use FileMenu Tools, which has a "size of folders" command (works in XYplorer's context menu too.) The nice thing about this one is that it gives you the option to analyze hard links. For example my Windows folder is actually 5GB smaller than the OS reports because there are so many hard links inside. Download it here (there is crazy adware in the author's download. This is a recent change and I hope it stops.) You can extract and run it portably too.

What I miss from XP and many older utilities is the "size on disk" feature (for adjusting partition performance.) Win7 no longer shows it for volumes, only folders. Neither does FileMenu Tools. XYplorer only shows it for folders as well. So I end up adding the "wasted space" for each drive in my head.

I'm also going to ask around about showing 2 "size" columns in XYP -- one showing the Space Used values, so I can compare each folder. For example, one of my drives is wasting 500mb of space at 16kb/sector. It is my browser cache. Analyzing this took much longer than needed while toggling the size column back and forth through the subfolders.
