Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
This topic caught my attention.
What are the best codecs/shell extension/whatever to install to get extended thumbnail support in WE and, consequently, XY?
FPV (not free) seems great for images.
What is the equivalent for videos? (personally, I'm mainly interested in mp4/flv/mkv)
And what about pdf?

Re: Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
For videos: Media Preview - Shell Extensions - I didn't test it.
For images: 1. SageThumbs.
2. nama5 ThumbsUp! - it only for RAW.
3. Emfplugin - thumbnails image previews of EMF and WMF in Windows 7.

• Video:
Any codec pack should do... You can find finely tuned ones depending on your OS and tweaking needs, here for example.
The most well known, comprehensive, and frequently updated, is probably "K-Lite Codec pack" (free). After some time with CCCP, I now happily use its "Basic" pack.
Media Preview - Shell Extensions: seems interesting! I'm curious to see how it compares to K-Lite... EDIT: may be better in its choice of frame, but here it's noticeably slower for MDBU (and thumb generation), plus you still need a codec pack if you want to preview your movies in XY (or in general, depending on your player). Note that both can cohabit, and be set for specific thumbnail support.
• Audio: EDIT: Woops, OT, you won't get thumbs with that
Your unusual needs should be covered by the same media codec packs, like K-Lite.
• Images:
mystic thumbs was once mentioned too. (didn't try it)
My advice would be to try SageThumbs, it should cover everyone's basic needs.
Then, if you're using some weird/rare format (mainly RAW) which is incorrectly supported, then as you said, you'll probably want to pay and go for FPV (FastPictureViewer Codec Pack).
• PDF:
PDF-XChange Viewer.
Nice integration andreasonably fast. EDIT: Thumbnails are definitely NOT snappy (on a crappy computer though). Comparatively, it's the internal preview that feels reasonable. If someone knows a better thumbs generator for PDF? Note that FPV supports recent PDF files (saved with Acrobat 8+).
Note: thanks to CFA, you can still double-click your PDFs to open them in e.g. Sumatra PDF (the fastest - but doesn't do integration).

For video files Icaros seems to be defacto. It is the thumbnail handler packed with K-Lite.

I solved the problem with thumbnails for flv, wmv, mp4, mpg, mov and other formats by installing this program.Slavaon wrote:For videos: Media Preview - Shell Extensions - I didn't test it.

Re: Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
I want to get thumbnails for text files. Tried two codecs, result is the same everywhere - there are thumbnails for files:
INF / REG / LOG / NFO / XML / CS / VBS / CSS / JS ... and the other is, and not for the right TXT: In Q-Dir works well: Question: how to get the thumbnails for XYplorer in TXT files?
Thank you for your attention.

Re: Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
Another good and free shell extension for previewing images is XnShellEx. It previews almost all popular formats including *.psd and adds a useful context menu giving fast access to common image processing features.
Re: Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
Thumbnails for archives using CBX Shell.
a). Be careful with the registry, make a backup!
b). This decision is not mine, found on some forum, do not remember where.
Solution for Windows 64 bit:
1). Install CBX Shell onto an x86 machine or virtual machine.
2). Copy the following 2 files from the 32bit machine on path (assumes default path) C:\Program Files\T800 Productions\CBX Shell
unrar.dll
CBXShell.dll
3). Rename copied CBXShell.dll to CBXShell.32.dll
4). Copy unrar.dll and the renamed CBXShell.32.dll to the install path on the 64bit windows machine (which should be same as above for default path).
5). Create and import a registry file with the following information:
Add the desired expansion in the settings XYplorer Previewed fomats for Imade files.
----
On systems of 32 bits perhaps, it is enough to establish CBX Shell and add the desired expansion in the settings XYplorer Previewed fomats for Imade files.
-----------------------
For Epub - Thumbnails.
1. Create a thumbs.reg whit this code:
2. Add the EPUB expansion in the settings XYplorer Previewed fomats for Imade files.
I hope it help somebody.

Re: Explorer Thumbnails - Images, videos, and possibly more
Has anyone had success in having thumbnails for .MOBI or .PRC ebook files? I'm debating on whether to try this MobiHandler here I'm a bit reluctant only because it changes the Windows property box. Thanks.
