PDF-XChange Editor

Post by klownboy »

For anyone who has installed PDF-XChange "Editor", which version did you install with success as far as maintaining compatibility with XYplorer, portable 32, 64? I have the free PDF-XChange Viewer installed already and I have for many years with no issues, but I have a need for an editor so I figured I'd stay with what has been good for me. Did you keep the free viewer installed as well or remove prior to or after installing the Editor? Thanks.

PDF-XChange Editor Plus 9.1 Build 356.0
No need for the free viewer, it works as PDF preview handler also in XY.
Its bundled with PDF X-Change Lite Printer driver which was part of the free viewer in the past.

Btw. the actual Chrome or Chrome based Edge or Firefox are enough for most PDF editing jobs.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3235)
Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69

Thanks Horst, I'll see if Edge or Chrome can do what I need to do before installing the PDF-XChange Editor. If I do go with the Editor would you recommend I install the 64 or just go with the 32 or even the portable. And sorry for all the questions, but do you think I should wait to uninstall the free viewer (currently on my system) until after the Editor is installed? Thanks again.

I have installed the x64 version of the Editor.
The installer makes this decision based on the OS.
I would uninstall the viewer before installing the Editor.

Thanks again Horst for the info. I'm having good success with this particular PDF file using Google Docs. It easily imports PDFs via Chrome and has decent editing tools to modify and then save to a number of different formats including PDF, docx, rtf, etc. The basic editors in Chrome and Edge are not capable of doing too much, but Google Docs is. I installed the portable version of PDF-XChange Editor just for testing, but I may not need it.

I use PDF-xchange. My previewer pdf preview just broke in windows explorer and xyplorer. I tried reinstalling, but still cannot get it to work. Any ideas?

Uninstall with the uninstall tool? then reinstall it and set as default PDF viewer.

The PDF-XChange Editor version 9.2.359.0 works fine for me
as PDF previewer in Explorer, Everything and XYplorer.

Check your system what previewer is configured for *.pdf.
The installer makes one error for me, it assigns the module not for *.pdf
but only to a general type.

Where do you make this change to the settings?

I check and change such settings with the Preview Handler Editor.
The change are directly visible witout any restart or other actions.
Here the archive of it, its no longer online available.

Dang...so, right before I got your email, I found the solution via: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3qjnxc0zhs6mw ... S.pdf?dl=0

But when I tried using the PDF Handler Editor to explore, it screwed it up so that the fix above doesn't work.

When I selected the Foxit PDF Handler, which is actually the one I use, no file associations where shown.

Any fresh ideas?

After further fidgeting, I set the Foxit PDF Preview Handler to .PDF and PDFXEdit.PDF...and that seemed to work.

The only necessary extension is the .PDF

Btw. do you have an x64 OS ?
For 32bit OS you will need another version of the Preview Handler Editor.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3235)
Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)

64bit. When I only used .pdf, Foxit PDF Handler didn't work. But it did work once I selected the PDFXEdit.PDF

Not sure why.

Is there such thing as 32 bit systems today?

Since the latest updates of Microsoft Edge
its PDF preview is working fine in all tools for me.
Tested with Everything, Free Commander, Total Commander and XYplorer.
