If you put them in the catalog a right-click gives you the option to go to the file location while the left click still opens them.

I think you need to familiarize yourself with the save options in XY, i.e. what settings are saved when and the granularity of it as well.

Configuration Start & Exit:

Have you ever checked Ctrl + Help/Various Information?
It shows you a list of settings that might slow down XY.

Excluding XY from AV always helps as well.

Rather than copying the path to the clipboard wouldn't it be easier to just Shift + Click the folder to open it in a new tab?

Have you excluded XY from your AV apps?
Any save settings once you have it back running before you reboot?

XY has always two panes loaded but in single pane mode you only see the active pane.
By clicking on the 1 or 2 you switch between pane 1 or 2 being active and shown.
