Re: TAFKAX

In my opinion, the word and concept of freedom is being misused all over the world. I would avoid to connect a commercial product with a notion of freedom... I.T. workers of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but your carpal tunnel strains. Smash the operating system. Yeah, you're probably r...

Re: TAFKAX

Upon hearing UHURU the first thing that leaps to mind is Lt. Uhuru from the original Star Trek series. A file manager connected with science fiction? Maybe not such a hot idea. :eh: Yes, that's how I first learned of the word. But there must have been interference on Roddenberry's coms frequency. H...

Almost forgot.
Yeah, I like almost everything here. Bravo! :appl: (I did not get the Huffington Post remark, though.)
Arianna Huffington, who is of Greek descent, is the founder of the Huffington Post. She is the only "Arianna" I know of and comes top in any Google search of that name.

Re: TAFKAX

Oh and, contradicting much of what I said earlier, don't sweat the current name. There may be an inverse relationship between quality of name and quality of software, regarding file managers. People may expect it, like brilliant professors are expected to be absent minded. Kind of like "What a ...

UHURU - Swahili for freedom :)
It's a good thing you intend to do. :appl: Not enough devs. (any?) do that.

Re: TAFKAX

You can choose a 'meaningless' name like Firefox or Google. But, people will seek meaning in a name whether you want them to or not. Google kind of reminds me of goggle or ogle, words associated with looking and searching. The latter is kind of appropriate, considering the amount of porn on the web....

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.

I'm not sure that Bozinis was first to implement this in a file manager. Vista was released in Jan 2007 and the first and second mentions of "breadcrumb" in his changelog were 23 June 07 and 14 February 08. http://zabkat.com/changes.txt There is a Wikipedia page on Breadcrumb (navigation) ...

Re: Is there a firm ETA on 64 bit?

1. Systems for power users and people who have to do complex work (spreadsheets, creating media content etc.), typically mouse and keyboard driven by people sitting at a desk -"the digital working class". So do you think there will ever be a new Windows for this group? Or is Win7 the end?...

Re: Is there a firm ETA on 64 bit?

To get the money of the masses you need to go tablet / touch screen nowadays. Metro is going there. The post-metro Windows will work only in smart phones. But AFAIK there are still people who use/need computers for "real work" (as opposed to multimedia, games, and phone calls). Quite inte...

Re: more rows per file in list

I disagree Stefan. I've long thought this would be a good idea. I have something like Google search results in mind -a Google mode. 1st line: file name 2nd line: other column info in same order as before It would be a much more efficient use of space, especially with dual panes or small screens. For...

Re: Manual Sorting in Win7 Explorer

there is no way around having some kind of DB which potentially becomes big and outdated But there are ways to facilitate clean-up. Timestamp the database records of each folder. Whenever a PMS list for a folder is created or amended (and perhaps accessed) record the date/time. Then users can purge...

Re: Manual Sorting in Win7 Explorer

I've been meditating about this one for a while. I just thought that, even if it doesn't happen soon, you might code Persistent Manual Sort in a way that makes it easier to implement in the future. The need it fulfils: 1. A better desktop Multiple desktop apps are all about different workspaces for ...

Re: Manual Sorting in Win7 Explorer

"solved 90% of the technical problems" Good to hear. :D FastStone Image Viewer's implementation is pretty good to use as a model. Move an item to new position and you automatically enter "Custom" sort mode. A text file is created in the folder with the list of items and their cus...

Re: Folder View Templates

+1 this would be better than the current setup There is a way to get similar functionality (with or without scripting). 1. Create a "Folder Views" sub-folder in the XY data folder 2. Create a sub-folder for each Folder View template you want e.g. images, documents, etc. 3. Adjust the folde...
