1) default button: a (customizable) one seems to be a good idea. Muscle memory is an underrated aspect.
2) size: your the man always looking for perfection - and you have asked. Could there be a dynamic render size range depending on the width of the tree pane?

The restriction to the tree isn't a technical one, right? If a clipboard is a valid trigger condition it could be applied to folders in a list as well.
