Hopefully this can be fixed in XY somehow, so I don't have to purchase a thirty dollar software license. It's an interesting program, however, and I'll keep it mind.
This is just a minor annoyance. I had hoped it was a trivial solution.

Re: How to un-squish vertical thumbnails?
What happens if you disable Config->thumbnails->Super-fast thumbnails, and then refresh the thumbs (go to that folder and pick View->cache->refresh thumbnails) ? No change. I've seen this happen on certain JPEGs with embedded EXIF thumbnails when the EXIF rotation = 90/270. It's basically a bad emb...

How to un-squish vertical thumbnails?
Vertical images are squished when they're vertical, despite their being black bars on both sides. How do I get them to display normally, but still be lined up? Shrink them to fit that space as a whole, not just in one direction.

You and I have both paid the price of my shoot-first-ask-questions-later callousness.

Because I searched through the ini for the word "tweak" a few weeks ago, and changed what seemed cool

Re: Ntwrk drives config'd to not auto-refresh, but tabs sloo
I'm not using any custom icons. I was using that tweak. I just turned it off and now it's faster. I don't use the tree. It might make sense for the tweak to be auto-disabled when the tree isn't displaying. (If it were displaying, its constantly changing might have clued me in.) Thanks for walking me...

Yes, valid and existing. When you click on any background tab to switch to it.
I don't know what CFI is.

Re: Cloud functionality
Make your settings folder a Git repository, and back it up to Bitbucket. Then you can open it (is it called "pull"ing?) at any other location.
Versioned backup and syncing, all at once.

Re: Ntwrk drives config'd to not auto-refresh, but tabs sloo
It only happens when clicking on the tab. When double clicking into a folder (or going up) it's instantaneous. Even on SFTP it's spritely.

Re: Ntwrk drives config'd to not auto-refresh, but tabs sloo
Almost exactly two seconds every time, regardless the location (root, not root, local, SFTP).
I just tried it in a fresh instance, and it doesn't happen.

I also turned off "show folder sizes" everywhere, if that makes a difference.

Re: Ntwrk drives config'd to not auto-refresh, but tabs sloo
This must be related to the changes you suggested here , but now the problem is different. For tabs that point to *any* drive (networked or local...and I'm assuming SFTP is considered networked by XY), the tab now displays pretty much instantly, but the cursor spins for almost exactly two seconds. A...

Re: Opts in CTB pointing to SFTP drive very slow to appear
That seems to be it. Without it, it's almost as fast as the local-drive buttons. With it, it has that (now thankfully) brief delay.
