Just to post an update to anyone that might face the same issue. The problem of random crashing seems to have resolved by uninstalling Adobe Reader DC and installing Adobe Reader XI. Simply repairing the install of Adobe Reader DC wouldn't fix the issue.

It is happening with the latest 21.60.0100 and definitely with the 21.60 because I remember waiting to see if that bug got fixed. I don't recall the version when the issue first started to occur. I initially started using XYplorer around v20.90.0300.

I've looked what you proposed and although it seems useful, it does not allow to "pin" the tabsets in a custom order. Instead it always shows them in alphabetical order.
