It was Mystic Thumbs. Problem rectified by going into the Mystic Thumbs control panel and disabling .iff filetype thumbnail.

I'm using Maya 2014 to batch render several images (.iff and .PSD). When I have the destination folder open in XYplorer, the batch render hangs at the initial rendering command, and XYplorer freezes. Usually, Maya writes an empty .iff file and incrementally adds the render data as it is generated - ...

Exit (and save), then restart always fixes it.
