How to completely disallow navigation to upper directories?

Post by SkyFrontier »

I'm trying to set a home, lock it and completely restrict user (my father) from accessing upper directories (he doesn't know *nothing* on computers and is having difficulties for being lost sometimes).
I already set miniTree, a button with a "home" icon, put its label in native language and set "goto "(target folder)"" as a way for him to get where he wants - needs! - to stay, as his only usage for XYplorer is the tagging system as a way to manage status of his visits for a non-profit organization. The thing is: locked home opens another folder and he's even more confused with two tabs instead of one!
Ideal solution would be completely disallow navigation to upper directories. Even better if he could be "locked" this current folder only, (optionally) unable to go to subfolders, too.
Any hint, please?
Thanks!

Set max number of tabs (config>Tabs) to 1 and lock location. It will however throw a dialog saying max tabs reached.

Nice one!
Completely locked and later I'll try to find a way to create an "admin" button to reset that setting at anytime I need (if I need) to enter anywhere else.
Suggestion: That warning could have a toggle to notify that "fully locked to 1 bar" on red at the statusbar. Ok'ing it each and every time can be very annoying...
Thanks, Serendipity!

You could hide the tree and the address bar, and hide folders from the list; and have only one locked tab. Then he would have a harder time to go anywhere else.

Generally, I have been thinking for a long time about restricting browsing to a certain area of the file system which would be a feature targeted to young children, disabled users, or computers beginners. What do you think of the demand for such a feature? (It would be very easy too implement!)

...even certain touchpad operations are prone to cause disasters, so a certain extra level of security could be very welcome - specially for those of us who simply *can't* have stuff back-up'ed all of the time.
If you're having this kind of limitation in mind, it would be certainly even better...

-all of those mentioned security measures seems to fail when a single action is done: enabling dual pane. Limitation of tabs to only one could imply in completely disallowing a second pane to open too, what about...?
Thanks for considering, Don!

For the records:
SHIFT+F9 (Customize Keyboard Shortcuts):
Hide Tree / Show Tree - SHIFT+F8.
Hide Address Bar / Show Address Bar - CTRL+SHIFT+F12.
It looks good and gives plenty of space for him to work.
-Can you also provide us a way to get rid of that notification window concerning Tab Limit, Don? Send it to the statusbar in red and all should be fine... I guess.

Yep, that would be the complete package.

I rethought my advice and here's some improvement:
1) you can also hide the tabs completely (menu Window / Show Tabs), so there is no need to have only one tab.
2) if you hide folders from the list (View / Show Items / Show Folders in List) then your dad has simply no option to open a new folder so there is no need for locking.

Wow.
XY in "read-only mode" used along some security tools that severely restricts user access to configs and features can be the ultimate way to leave computer with kids and relatives/guests in general. There are other programs acting as a layer between attempts of system changes and effective disk access, but they can be troublesome at times, not to mention some that pretending to be sharp are a system razor blade in fact, disabling random system features in claims of "being top-notch protection".

I'd certainly go with a less intrusive solution.
