Tab groups

Post by surrender »

Configs are good because I can have all kinds of settings and load them at will. This includes my predetermined tabs which i want to work with. But, may be we can have something called 'Tab Group' i.e. have a set of tabs that we often work with in one group while another set of tabs in another. I carry around my laptop a lot and at work i work with different set of tabs than at home. But if I want both i cant have them because they live in different configs. So Tab group might help me open my set of tabs quickly.

Alternatively, since we will have Fav panels soon, one can have the required subfolders inside a folder and launch all subfolders at once by right-clicking> launch all.

Technically yes, logistically no. Other things will come first. Sorry, but I'm a mono-processor bio-system. :)

I dont know if anyone else would find this useful. But in my case i have categories in catalog like music, pics, work, important etc. It would be nice to open, for eg. music category items as tabs in one go instead of clicking them one by one. But it should also be possible to close all those tabs in one go.

Simply put, open set of tabs in one click, work with them as you like and close them in one click.

I don't know about the "Open all" for categories, but Don mentionned a couple of times his idea for new Catalog items that would be what you describe: "Tab container" or something, to open(/close) a few tabs in one click

Since this IS the WISH area :)

The use case I most miss from my other explorer replacement, which has dual panes (this isnt another request for dual pane - asked and answered - just giving you the use case):

Pane1: A specific directory

Pane2: 2 tabs, each pointing to specific directories

I want to be able to very quickly JUMP to a layout with the directories in the panes as outlined above.

Prior to dual pane - I would like to be able to call up a specific group of tabs with specific locations.

Still loving XYPlorer. I have 5 explorer repalcements on my machine right now - tinkering with all of them. Some have features I like, but I keep going back to XYPlorer.

Topic scope creep incoming:

It is really becoming apparent that there IS a fine line between some of the functionality myself and others have been asking for and performance/intrusiveness of the software. Some of the tools I am looking at intrude into the registry seemingly at will with dozens of entries. Others even recommends that you EDIT the registry values to change the software behavior. I can really appreciate the design direction XYPlorer has gone with respect to this.

IMHO I do think Dual Pane resonates VERY well with people (I am trolling the forums of all of these explorer replacement tools I have loaded) and I find it terribly useful.

I also think that having dual panes, with TABS is also INCREDIBLY useful - as well as tab groups.

Being able to save layout configurations is a commonly asked for feature - obviously here is where the line gets crossed - how do you save this information and to where - so that it doesn't leave garbage around? Interesting design problem actually.

Preview panes are a big hit in all of the forums. It varies from requests for some of the basic types to having their own set of viewers outside of the normal system viewers. This obviously can make the program heavy, and I vote use what is built in or what windows uses as a default.

Anyway - sorry for the rant - I just really love this tool and I want it to continue to be successful and useful.

Code: Select all

+ Catalog | Context Menu of Categories: Added command "Open Folders
in Tabs". Will do the following:
      (1) Close all unlocked tabs (apart from the current).
      (2) Create a new background tab for each folder contained within
          the Category.
Items pointing to anything but straight folders (like not-
existing-folders, files, searches, scripts, filters, etc.) are
          ignored.
This feature allows you to easily switch sets of tabs.
Great, thanks. :D .
