Smart serial renaming

Post by tiago »

I don't understand how serial renaming works.
If I move from a larger name to a shorter, I'd like the caret at least to be positioned before the extension dot, not after it.

current behavior:
Hyphenation|.dat - leaving from here with down key
infl9.tmp| - starts renaming at the end of the extension. Why?

desired:
Hyphenation|.dat - leaving from here with down key
infl9|.tmp - starts renaming at the end of the name. I'm renaming the file, not the extension!

other situation:
Basic|.asn - leaving from here with down key
Hyphe|nation.dat - starts renaming in the middle of the name - some may like it (even me, some days!), but I'd like to have the option to start renaming at the end of the name.

An option to start at the beginning of the file name wouldn't be bad too as I often have to rename files that have numbers at the start of the name and that's boooooooooring... :(

so far i'm not using xyplorer on a regular basis - it has some more or less serious aspects that prevent me from thinking that it is really a handy file manager
for instance, windows explorer (xp) has plenty of disadvantages but al least it has 'single click' feature

but still i would like to propose to Donald considering the way of handy renaming that is implemented into the application called 'pitaschio' (mine version is 2.26):

http://pitaschio.ara3.net/manual.htm
you may want to read this part of the manual: Explanation of functions ( explorer ) ---> Extended file rename

behaviour (that i have in my windows explorer due to pitaschio):

on pressing F2 - the whole file name is selected except the dot and the extension
on pressing up/down - again the whole file name is selected except the dot and the extension
on pressing F2 and left - the caret is positioned precisely before the file name
on pressing F2 and right - the caret is positioned precisely after file name (before the dot)

on pressing F2 twice - only the extension is selected (without the dot)
on pressing F2 thrice - everything is selected (the title, the dot, the extension)
on pressing F2 for four times - again the whole file name is selected except the dot and the extension
and so on...

i had been using this approach for more than 2 years without any problems, it's very convenient

(by the way, renaming is possible not only in respect to files, but also folders. in case a folder has the dot in its title, only 'the part before the dot' is selected)

Adamantine,

the sequence on regular renaming operations was object of discussion here: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6484 which mentions several previous discussions so there's room to improve on this area too.
My point in this post is the feature of jumping from a file previously in rename mode to its upper or inferior neighbor using up/down keys. Sorry if I couldn't make it clear for you and thanks for the indication.
