Update Mini Tree with new and renamed folders

Post by Jerry »

I love the Mini Tree feature. But -- I'm always creating new folders or renaming existing ones in the file list and these changes unfortunately do not appear in the Mini Tree. (For renames, I'm referring to renaming folders that are not currently in the Mini Tree. After the rename, they still don't appear.) Please make that possible or at least configurable. Thanks

Works fine here. Is your tree locked?

No, it's not locked. Using XYplorer 9.10.0022 on Win 7 Pro 64-bit. Is there an option I have set somewhere that's affecting this?

No, this should always work, even on a locked tree. No option to turn it off.

How do you rename?

Here's the situation: I'm a few levels deep in a tree on an external drive, in a folder that is expanded in the mini tree. There are other subdirectories in that folder which appear in the mini tree. While in the file list on the right for that folder, I press Ctrl-N to create a new folder. The New Folder entry appears in the file list, but not in the mini-tree. I then rename the new entry (with F2) and still nothing shows up. Also, if I rename an existing subfolder in that folder which doesn't currently appear in the mini-tree, it doesn't show up renamed.

Now what does work, is if the folder in which I'm working is in the mini-tree but collapsed. Then the newly created folder appears. (First a plus-sign appears next to the folder and then if I expand it, the new folder is there.) But renames of other folders not already in the mini-tree still don't show up in the collapsed mini-tree.

Using XYplorer 9.10.0022.

This is how mini tree works ever since. Not a bug.

I assumed it wasn't a bug so that's why I posted it in this Wishes forum. I think this behavior should changed. Why shouldn't newly created and renamed folders appear in the Mini Tree? I'm expecting the Mini-Tree to track all (and just) the folders that I am working on. Isn't that its intended function?

Almost: Mini-Tree tracks all (and just) the folders that I am working in (not on).

Oh sorry, in my original post i meant if you rename a folder already visible in MT then the MT will reflect this change. Otherwise, as Don mentioned if you add new folder in your list it wont show up in MT, unless ofcourse you go into that folder (with unlocked tree).

I don't see why the Mini Tree should be restricted in not showing new and renamed folders. I don't see any difference between working "in" vs working "on" a folder from a workflow perspective and for the purposes of tracking it in the Mini Tree. So my wish is that an option be added to enable this behavior as one desires.

A common part of my work flow is this: I extract directories from a RAR file into a folder (using WinRAR). I go into that folder in the file list of XYplorer. I then either rename one of the directories or typically create a new directory in which I then will copy (merge) the contents of the two or more "part" directories. So after I create the new folder I want to then go into one of the "part" folders to select the contents and drag it over to the new folder in the tree -- BUT the new folder doesn't appear in the Mini Tree! So then I have go up and go down into the new folder first and then go back and redo the selection. Or, I have to turn off the Mini Tree when doing this.

Well, the idea of MiniTree (MT) is to minimize number of items in tree. I do a lot of renames myself especially Batch renames, I would hate if MT added all those paths to my nicely trimmed tree. Maybe you could make use of command loadtree to custom fit your needs.

I looked at the loadtree command but don't quite see that as an alternative in my case when I'm always generating new folders and not working with a relatively static Mini Tree. So I still think updating for new and renamed folders should be optional behavior. In your case, for batch renames, adding a checkbox option in the rename dialogs to exclude from MiniTree would work or you could just keep the global option disabled.

Tip: Use Create New Subfolder Here in a tree folder's context menu to have new folders added to the mini tree.

Yes, but still doesn't address the renames not showing up. It's also more convenient to do regular Ctrl-N in the file list. The Create New Subfolder Here takes me into the new folder which I don't usually need to do since I create the new folder to then drag things into it from other folders.

So I hope you will consider my suggestion.

Maybe you can combine commands ID for "Create new folder" (#231) with "Refresh Current folder" (#483) and create your own shortcut key. So whenever you hit that key you get a new folder that gets added to the Minitree.
