Resort list immediately upon rename

There is a tickbox in Tools -> Config -> General that is called "Resort list immediately upon rename".

However, the functionality that is provided via that tickbox doesn't work 100%. Resort does not happen IMMEDIATELY upon rename, but only happens if there is some other activity in the folder or the next time a refresh is done (either manually or through a setting in "View"). In fact, I'd hazard a guess that with that box ticked, auto-refresh suspended and no other activity in that folder (including navigating away from it) the resort will never happen.

The way I'd expect the IMMEDIATE functionality to be implemented is once I rename the file and it changes from rename mode to either selected or unselected that's when the resort should be triggered. I understand that this is a literal understanding of "IMMEDIATELY", perhaps even a pedantic one, but I don't see any other way of interpreting it...

My files do get sorted by name so that's why I expected an effect, but none happened unless I have refresh switched on or manually initiated activity.

How do you rename? This works only for manual rename.

I go into edit mode and paste the new name over the current one.

P.S. Should work for any kind of rename, be it manual, via a script or otherwise.

The way I test is I have several packs of RAR files each of which has one file stored inside. I extract from one pack, rename the file and only when I start extracting from the next pack, which means a new file appears, the freshly-renamed one goes where it is supposed to.

Cannot reproduce here. To test that I created a new folder and created some 10 new text files. I went to the last text file and renamed it to "01" and it automatically jumps to first position after i hit enter. So all fine here with v0046.

Sorry, I had to delete my previous reply because, as it turns out, it actually doesn't work and a different method that I tried was not valid so it has produced a false positive. Just renamed a file manually, click on an empty space to loose the focus and it's still where it is.

Ah! You currently have to <enter> for this functionality to work. I'm not even sure if I should fix this. It's a handy option to have the file either jump or stay.

Yep, I can reproduce that.

1) Enter rename mode.
2) Change file name.
3) Exit rename mode by clicking on another file.

Oddly, it seems you can repeat these steps multiple times without it re-sorting.
However, if you remove step 2, so that you enter rename mode and exit without making a change, it will resort.

Using Tab to exit rename mode seems to produce the same results.

EDIT: I feel this behavior (except for re-sorting when no change is made) is the better option when using Tab. Not so sure about mouse.

Yes, I believe you should fix it. The logic would speak that, if aforementioned tickbox is ticked, any operation, be it a click of a mouse elsewhere, pressing enter, navigating to another folder etc that would result in finalization of a rename procedure should be treated as such and result in resorting mechanism being triggered.

      should NOT be immediately resorted when the rename was done using 
      TAB (serial rename) or by clicking outside the rename box (immediate 
      resort is perceived as disturbing). This worked so far, but the list 
      was actually resorted when the name of the file to be renamed was 
      not changed. So there was an unwanted exception from the exception. 
      Fixed.
