Breadcrumb weirdness

Post by kunkel321 »

Is it normal to have my user folder "swkunkel" duplicated like this?
Image

You'll notice there's an extra "SWKunkel" one above it now... It didn't used to be there until my workplace put in some off-site servers, and remapped our "My Documents" folder. I don't know if it's related, but often, if I try to browse to a subfolder of swkunkel (not the server one, but C:\Users\swkunkel), via the "downward path" of the BC bar, then I'll get the "Folder not available" message in the pane. It's a pain in the pane. :appl: But seriously, I can get to the folders via the tree, bookmark, etc.

Is it possible that the BC bar is looking in the wrong folder (i.e. in SWKunkel, rather than swkunkel) ?

EDIT: I'm noticing in the list of drives, my SWKunkel folder actually has lower-caps in the drive description (i.e. H:\ - swkunkel ....). Perhaps this also indicates that the BC bar is "seeing" the wrong folder (?) IDK.

@kunkel321

Yes, if your Documents and User folder have the same name (just differently capitalized) then XY will have a problem disambiguating them. What does Explorer do here?

There doesn't seem to be a problem with Win Exp or with xplorer2 or TotalCommander... All those apps require me to browse to it though... If I browse to it in xyplorer it works fine. Bookmarks are fine. If I use "Downward Path" or SessionManager though, I get problems. Here's a shot where I called up these folders (that are in my user folder) with SessionManager. Interestingly, if I click in the Address Bar and press Enter, I get the error again. But if I use the BC arrow (as shown) then it will go to the correct folder...

Do you happen to know if it's safe to rename my C:\Users\blah folder??

:blackstorm: Don't! It's tied to your user account name.

XYplorer allows you to go just by the special folder name, e.g.:

Desktop
Documents
Donald

Other file manager probably don't -- dunno.

Now when it looks like this, XY will obviously have a problem:

Desktop
Donald
Donald

So you should rename the Documents folder to something that's different from you user name.

But why are some methods (like Favorite Folder bookmarks) able to find the correct folder, but others (like Downward Path) are not?

Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. I'm not sure if I'll be able to rename the Documents folder, since it resides on the company servers, but I'll give it a try tomorrow when I'm plugged in.

I guess your Favorite Folder bookmark points to the real path (C:\blah balh...)

Ha! I hadn't even paid attention... Some of my bookmarks point to C:\blah and work, others point to Donald\blah and don't work. (actually they point to swkunkel/blah.)

Your other post prompted me to look into the %user% thing....
If I type %user% into the address bar, and press enter, it does browse to the correct folder.

But check this out... One of my bookmarks pointed to swkunkel\Google Drive\@WorkingDocs\ and was not working. I changed it to %user%Google Drive\@WorkingDocs\. Now if I click on it, xyplorer attempts to browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\XYplorer\swkunkelGoogle Drive\@WorkingDocs !

EDIT: Okay having the slash in there helps! Now it browses to swkunkel\Google Drive\@WorkingDocs. It's still accessing the wrong one though...
EDIT 2: This majorly bites. Is it possible to make my documents folder completely invisible to xyplorer?
Well I guess I won't worry too much until I see if I can change the name of my Docs folder. Or have our IT people at work change it for me... Having two 'special folders' with the same name is bound to cause problems in other areas too.

Thanks Sammy! I will try that.

Incidentally, I just tried to open some folders with SessionManager, and got this:
Image

There's got to be a hangup in xyplorer... Or Windows or something..

EDIT: Actually..... In retrospect..... It's possible that I MAY have deleted that particular folder and forgot to tell SessionManager... :appl:

Still no love here...
I changed my Documents folder from swkunkel to skunkel (which, annoyingly, is my default user name anyway) then restarted laptop. The name change did seem to "take," as you can see in the picture. Also in the picture though, you can see that xyplorer hasn't registered the name change...

Image

I tried doing a ::fresh launch and got the same effect.

Ideas? Am I missing something?

EDIT: Well, I talked to the IT guys here and they are going to try and merge the two folders... I'll report back when I see what happens.

Check these environment variables in XYplorer (to see if your rename action changed anything), like this:

Code: Select all

echo "%personal%";
These are my values (BTW, as you see %personal% is localized to German):

Code: Select all

%personal% = Dokumente
%personalreal% = C:\Users\Donald\Documents
%user% = Donald
%userreal% = C:\Users\Donald

So I guess renaming that documents folder ("personal") didn't take after all(?)
Weird. I dunno. The IT guys here are going to try and merge the two folders for me tonight.
I'll try this test again tomorrow and see what happens.

Code: Select all

echo "%personal%"; = SWKunkel
echo "%personalreal%"; = \\NK-FILE\Staff\SWKunkel
echo "%user%"; = swkunkel
echo "%userreal%"; = C:\Users\swkunkel
