XYplorer not responding on refresh

Post by perthbus.info »

Hi, long time user of XYplorer, but this current problem is frustrating me so much I confess to the mortal sin of occasionally returning to Windows File Explorer - but only momentarily as I'm soon reminded why I bought XYplorer in the first place.

When I want to refresh the file list in XYplorer, both in thumbnail view and in detail view, XYplorer freezes up anywhere between 10 seconds and several minutes. I've only encountered this problem since purchasing a new PC with Windows 8.1.

Much of my work with XYplorer is hand-in-hand with image manipulation and this problem significantly impedes my workflow.

I've tried several things including restarts, running with other applications closed, etc, but to no avail.

I'm hoping the pundits might have some clues, please.

Try disabling Windows Defender temporarily, or add an exception for XYplorer, see if the situation improves.

Just to make sure: this happens also in Details view, so it's not related to thumbnails?

Thanks for your responses.
I usually work in thumbnail view, but I have also tested it in detail view & had the same problems.
I'll add an exception in Windows Defender, try it & report back.

An update. Windows Defender had already been disabled when I installed SpyHunter 4. I disabled SpyHunter but it seemed to make no difference.
Just now, working in detail view, just moving back up a directory level via the left arrow key produced this result:

Please note that whilst I've assigned drive letters, this particular one is just a short cut to my local hard drive, not a network directory.

My next suspect to test disabling will be my anti-virus software, Total Defense. For many years at home & work I used a well-trusted locally (Australian) produced product called VET, but unfortunately when such things get successful, they become the target for international takeovers. This has taken place twice with this product and I wonder with its fancy dialogue boxes, etc, whether it is as streamlined as the original VET product.

Have tested further by disabling anti-virus software, plus ensuring any programs that might be responsible for file locks being closed. No noticeable difference.

Does it also happen with a fresh instance? See http://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=fresh

It certainly appears to work better using fresh; which suggests something I've changed in the settings may be responsible.

How do I reset the .ini to default? By deleting it? I'd like to be able to set it back to default then re-test with the individual changes to the settings.

Thanks for your patience with this.

Yep, delete it or rename it. Then "Restart without Saving".

OK, I've worked with a new .ini without changing any settings at all and I'm afraid the problem is still occurring in both detail & thumbnail view. Had hoped I could report otherwise!

After saving 3 small photo files, here is the result of trying to refresh the view. The top three photos are only about 80kb.

N: drive is mapped to a local directory, not a network drive.

What if you directly browse this directory?
